X11R6.8.0 [Update 4]

By Yaba
Published: Sep 8 2004

X11R6.8.0 is released! Sources are available. Unfortunately I cannot find release notes anywere. I will update this as soon as I know more. All I have until now is a posting on Slashdot.

You all know what this means: Real transparency is no longer a dream on X desktops.

[Update 2004-09-09]

Obviously the release was pulled back after someone made an inofficial announcement too early. Nevertheless SuSE 9.1 users can already download binaries. If SuSE did not do much patching, maybe users of other distributions also can use the source rpm?

[Update 2004-09-09/2]

Sources are available on ftp://ftp.x.org/pub/X11R6.8.0/tars/, however the server is pretty busy. So please try a mirror:

I placed the release notes on my web server (please don't submit this link on /. ;-) ).

[Update 2004-09-09/3]

Emerge package for gentoo users: http://www.gentoo-portage.com/ebuild_download.php?e=x11-base/xorg-x11/xorg-x11-6.8.0.ebuild

[Update 2004-09-09/3]

All files are also available via eDonkey/overnet:

X11R6.8.0-src1.tar.gz
X11R6.8.0-src2.tar.gz
X11R6.8.0-src3.tar.gz
X11R6.8.0-src4.tar.gz
X11R6.8.0-src5.tar.gz
X11R6.8.0-src6.tar.gz
X11R6.8.0-src7.tar.gz

[Update 2004-09-12]

Finally there are official pages about the X11R6.8.0 release.

 Cant find sources!

by valerie on: Sep 8 2004

All I see is
"Please see the X.org website later today for the annoucment"
The Xorg page still shows 6.7 as the latest release. Guess its not out as yet..

PS: Note the spelling mistake for Announcement on the page.. somebody was in a hurry :)

Sorry, they were taken offline. Obviously someone made an unofficial announcement.

Previously there were also some release notes available.

Sources are back if you use the link from X.org to the latest releases. Unfortunately the directory is password protected. Obviously they want to mirror it first.

You don't need rpms to install kde3.3

I'm running debian, and kde3.3 right now.

It is already in one of the std. repositories.

 Advantage?

So what is the advantage of using 6.8 at this current point in time? Does KDE 3.3 make use of the transparency features? Or any other programs, for that matter?

I think I just answered my own question :X Programmers or WinDeco engines can make use of it, etc.

If you go and vote for http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60525 perhaps kde could have all inactive windows transparent. It's the best thing I can think of as it improves focus on the active window.

You need Nvidia binary drivers and enabled "RenderAccel" then everything will fly!

Does SuSE still boot into kdm with the new X Server? Or do you boot into runlevel 3 and start X by hand?

boot with direct startx is faster. the shadow now works fast enough.
i feel a generally window draw optimisation. e.g. when i move windows.

but the translucent window option is slow. and it works only with static background. e.g no background video :-)

xcompmgr is at http://freedesktop.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/xapps/xcompmgr/
just download the tarball, and use the ./autogen.sh and make. Then to use it, just type ./xcompmgr -c
try it just to see if it is stable enough for you.
if for some reason it crashes, you must log from another machine and kill xcompmgr.
