 Good but a little inconsistent

by klemperal on: Apr 23 2009

Score 50%

First of all, let me say thank you for this theme. Its looking great and continues to get better with each release. However, what keeps me from using this theme full time is the inconsistency of some of the icons. For example; the icon for 'software sources' uses a different style globe icon than the majority of the other internet related globe icons; the 'computer,' 'take screenshot' and 'login window' icons are inconsistant with the 'sessions' screen resolution' and 'screensaver' icons or vice versa.
There also seems to be inconsistency in the tone of a lot of the icons. What I mean by this is that some of the icons are very shiny looking ('movie player,' 'Brasero,' the tray icon for rhythmbox and some of the icons within rhythmbox) while most of the other icons are much less shiny (the new OO.o icons, all the menu icons ie 'games' applications' etc.) Personally, I like the less shiny icons that are more frequent in this theme--but thats just my taste. You could really go either way with this theme (super shiny or less shiny) and it would look great. The current mix of the two, as it is, just doesn't feel right, however.
Anyway, thanks again for the theme. I only critique it because I love it :) Keep up the good work my friend.

Thanks for the comment,

Feedback and comments are always wanted as I want to make this icon theme, the best it can be.

I have been aiming for weekly or every fortnight releases as I believe smaller updates are better then major updates like 0.5 to 1.0.

But as we move towards 1.0, I will be going through all the icons which don't matched completely and re-create them using the current icon set.

Also about the other issue you bought up (super shiny or less shiny), at the minute am aiming for less shiny as well, as I hope it fits better overall then "super shiny" icons which are currently used in this icon theme.

Thanks again for commenting, feedback is always needed

...for the last few weeks, and I have to say that this is definitely my all-time favorite icon theme I've ever seen on here. I think this theme will become the default icon theme of some distro sooner or later, I can see it happening! :-)

Thanks for the comment,

Am glad your enjoying the icon theme,

As you can see quite few icons come from KDE 4 - Oxygen, as I believe they create one of best icon sets which are released under a open source licence

Thanks for the comment,

The GTK Theme comes from the "Step into Freedom" Theme Pack (Link Below)

http://francois.vogelweith.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&catid=18:themes&id=30:gnome-qstep-into-freedomq-theme&Itemid=23

key, repositories, and also a easy how to, is included in that URL.

Thanks for the comment,

Currently the way to do it involves a few steps which I have written step by step below.

Hopefully in the future it will be easier for users, as am thinking of creating script for alternative distro icons and folders.

How to install the alternative distro icons and the alternative folder icons
-----------------------------------
1.First extract the tar.bz2 file anyway - desktop or your home folder.
2.Have the folder with the icons open and ready
3.Go to your home folder and press Ctrl+H so you can view all the hidden folders and look for a folder called ".icons"
4.Select that folder and chose the folder called "Simple" and then select the folder called "scalable" by now you should see many different folders named apps, actions, devices etc...
5.Chose the folder that is called "places" you will now see many different icons - keep this folder open in a tab or window and go back to the original folder which included the extra icons
6.Select the folder called "Alternative Versions" and again chose "places" and rename one of the distro icons from "start-here-gnome.png"* to "start-here.png"
7.Paste the new icon called "start-here.png" to the other window or tab and when paste in - a prompt should come up asking if you want replace the icon say yes

Congratulations you are now finished, enjoy your new icon
--------------------

* - Example Used

* May have to log out and log in for the new icon to appear

If you want to use the old folder icons select the folders which contain the folder icons and just copy and paste over the folders in the ".icons" folder and select yes when asked

Hopefully that has been helpful if not please write again or PM for any more help

Ok, it worked, but I had to re-install the icon theme doing the modifications you wrote before re-installing it!
thx 4 that!
Another thing: in the screenshot of the home folder, I see that you have the Document, Images, Videos....folders with pictures on them.
In my 'places' folder I also have theese icons but they don't auto-apply to my Documents, Images...etc. folders in my home! Can you help me with that too??
Sry, but I'm noob on linux in general... :P

No Problem, again it involves a few steps which I have written step by step below again.

Please note this guide is based on Nautilus - the default file manager for GNOME

How to install the alternative folder icons
-----------------------------------

1.Open up Nautilus/File Manager and load your home folder
2.Right click on any folder you want to change the icon and select "properties"
3.Click the folder icon currently the default blue one (Top Left)
4.New window will appear - select the top folder normally named "user", "ubuntu" etc... (Whatever the login name is)
5.Press Ctrl+H so you can view all the hidden folders and look for a folder called ".icons"
6.Select that folder and chose the folder called "Simple" and then select the folder called "scalable" by now you should see many different folders named apps, actions, devices etc...
7.Chose the folder that is called "places" you will now see many different icons - chose icon you want to use e.g. folder-sound
8.Click open, the new icon should be shown now in the top left instead of the default blue folder icon

Repeat the steps again for all other folders you want to change

Hopefully that has sorted out your problem.

Extra's 0.9-6 will include these instructions till the script is finished
