Description:

This is an extensive set of icon themes based on GNOME and Tango, with some inspiration from Human, Tango Generator, Elementary, and other open source projects. The project's goal is to integrate closely with gnome-icon-theme, while greatly expanding its available icons and allowing users to choose from 7 completely different and unique color schemes. With the additional source pack, an unlimited number of complete color variations can be rebuilt from source.

The icons and their color schemes are designed to complement my Shiki-Colors GTK Themes and their additional artwork.

There are 7 color variations: Brave (Blue), Wise (Green), Human (Orange), Noble (Purple), Wine (Red), Dust (Chocolate) and Illustrious (Pink).

GNOME-Colors consistently themes 99% of default icons + 1000's more in almost every popular linux distribution. Every single icon included in the set is drawn perfectly at each and all sizes, so you will never have to see a blurry icon ever again!

Important, must read or clowns will eat you:
* To install, drag and drop the .tar.gz file into GNOME's Appearance Preferences, or extract it and copy the gnome-* folders to /usr/share/icons as administrator (i.e. sudo nautilus /usr/share/icons in Ubuntu). The gnome-colors-common folder is a required dependency. You MUST install it in order for all the icon sets to work correctly.

* You may alternately use the included Makefile for system-wide installation, just type make install as administrator or make user-install for per-user installation. For more options, type make help.

* You may want to install the 'extras-gnome-colors' package for extra icon themes (Liferea, Comix, Exaile, etc.) by following the instructions in the readme.

* If you installed the icons through the appearance preferences, for the icons to theme root/admin applications in Ubuntu, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install gnome-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

Changelog:

GNOME-Colors depends on the package "gnome-icon-theme". If you don't use GNOME, make sure you have it!

5.5.1 (2009-10-28)
* Add icons for Empathy.
* Add better support for Ubuntu Karmic's panel applets.
* Minor updates and clean-ups on some icons.

5.5 (2009-09-25)
* New, redesigned folders!
* Add folder-xdg icons for Karmic/GNOME 2.28.
* Add some new icons/update others for better Karmic support.
* Minor bugfixes.

It's very recommended to remove any existing version before upgrading!

You MUST install "gnome-colors-common" as well! otherwise you'll have a broken icon set and clowns will eat you.

The repo is not maintained by me directly, but by the gnome-colors packagers.

They are really good at what they do, but I think the past few releases simply have come out way too fast for anyone to keep up (They've been almost daily for this entire week) and in many cases the file structure and content has been changed dramatically, so it might take a while. Besides, when it comes to apt repos, weekly/monthly updates seem to make more sense than getting an update popup every other day :P

Is there any chance of having this great icons in black, white or grey color?

I've thought about this much - but it's highly unlikely. The amount of work that goes into creating a single new color variation is outstanding - and the work to maintain it is even more so, as I do every single icon recoloring manually - with inkscape. Perhaps if the idea would have come up before making the purple version, I would have done that instead.

That said - a gray version might have a pretty good chance of being easily created with scripts (by simply modifying saturation), but perhaps it would only be a fun, unofficial extra - since the overall quality and polish wouldn't match up with the other manually recolored sets.

He is right it is a big request to make. What about you creating your own modification? You won't loose any polish if you just convert any icons from colour to gray scale. They may be a dark and not exactly Black/White but you can adjust them with GIMP easily.

You can probably just choose the icons you want recolored (use a script to remove syslinks for easier browsing), and finally run a script to change saturation or make the icons grayscale.

For the scalable icons, you can run a quick inkscape script to export them as 256x256 .png's so you can do the same to them.

If I do get the chance to go through all that again, I'd do a color-agnostic aluminium set.

Or perhaps just make it a different project and base it on the more photo-realistic Mango iconset (the tango sequel). Developing just one color neutral icon set is tons easier than 5 at the same time!

Your theme looks great on Linux Mint ;) I have just one small sugestion... I think you could make a better icon for mp3 player, it could be similar to Ipod or that kind of mp3 player (white or metalic look like new icons for Hard Disks), and his display could be your 5 colours (wise, brave,..). I cant wait for version 4 ;)

Thank you very very much !

No problem, I was thinking the same. The current icon could do with a refresh.

As for version 4, it'll be just the current 3.8 with restyled folders to better fit the new desktop/device icons. Don't expect anything too crazy, just the same usual consistency refreshes the theme's been getting recently :P

New phone and music player icons are added. Not much else, but those changes deserved a minor release.

The devices in the '/devices/extras' folder were all removed. The reasons being:

-A few of them had conflicting licenses.
-None of them were recolored for each set.
-The download saves about 3-4MB of size by not including them.

That said, you can still get them from their original (and more complete) source!

They're from the "gnome-icon-theme-extras" package. You can browse the git online here:
http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gnome-icon-theme-extras/tree/Gadgetango

Or you can checkout all the icons yourself with this command:
git clone git://git.gnome.org/gnome-icon-theme-extras

 Mozilla Personas

Love the themes! I use them for custom Personas for Firefox. May I add them to the Personas Gallery? Sorry, I never published someone else's work before and it seems I should ask permission rather than just cite the creative source.

This is a free project consisting of GPL (for all gnome and gnome-colors icons) and public domain (for tango/tango-based icons) licenses so don't worry, go ahead!
