Description:

This is an extensive set of icon themes based on GNOME and Tango, with some inspiration from Human, Tango Generator, Elementary, and other open source projects. The project's goal is to integrate closely with gnome-icon-theme, while greatly expanding its available icons and allowing users to choose from 7 completely different and unique color schemes. With the additional source pack, an unlimited number of complete color variations can be rebuilt from source.

The icons and their color schemes are designed to complement my Shiki-Colors GTK Themes and their additional artwork.

There are 7 color variations: Brave (Blue), Wise (Green), Human (Orange), Noble (Purple), Wine (Red), Dust (Chocolate) and Illustrious (Pink).

GNOME-Colors consistently themes 99% of default icons + 1000's more in almost every popular linux distribution. Every single icon included in the set is drawn perfectly at each and all sizes, so you will never have to see a blurry icon ever again!

Important, must read or clowns will eat you:
* To install, drag and drop the .tar.gz file into GNOME's Appearance Preferences, or extract it and copy the gnome-* folders to /usr/share/icons as administrator (i.e. sudo nautilus /usr/share/icons in Ubuntu). The gnome-colors-common folder is a required dependency. You MUST install it in order for all the icon sets to work correctly.

* You may alternately use the included Makefile for system-wide installation, just type make install as administrator or make user-install for per-user installation. For more options, type make help.

* You may want to install the 'extras-gnome-colors' package for extra icon themes (Liferea, Comix, Exaile, etc.) by following the instructions in the readme.

* If you installed the icons through the appearance preferences, for the icons to theme root/admin applications in Ubuntu, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install gnome-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

Changelog:

GNOME-Colors depends on the package "gnome-icon-theme". If you don't use GNOME, make sure you have it!

5.5.1 (2009-10-28)
* Add icons for Empathy.
* Add better support for Ubuntu Karmic's panel applets.
* Minor updates and clean-ups on some icons.

5.5 (2009-09-25)
* New, redesigned folders!
* Add folder-xdg icons for Karmic/GNOME 2.28.
* Add some new icons/update others for better Karmic support.
* Minor bugfixes.

It's very recommended to remove any existing version before upgrading!

You MUST install "gnome-colors-common" as well! otherwise you'll have a broken icon set and clowns will eat you.

 Dropbox

 by MrMagical on: Jan 8 2009

Thank you for your work on this amazing icon theme!

I have some information about the Dropbox issue.

Dropbox uses the emblem system in nautilus. It just switches the emblem when the status of a file or folder changes.
The default emblems are placed in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64/emblems and consist of 3 rather ugly icons as you can see here:
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/62148/DropboxIcons.jpg
They're only included in one size and aren't scalable.

If you include emblems in your theme with the same names they'll be used instead of the default ones. You won't have to add it to the extras.

 Smileys

How can I use the smileys included in this icon pack to be used by Pidgin?

It would be a great way to tie it all together (that and the pidgin stock smileys are terrible - gaim was better)

Thanks!

That's a very good question, to which I don't know the answer. I think pidgin just uses their own custom smiley set. GNOME-Colors doesn't even have smileys, it just inherits the ones from your GNOME icon set. If you can get a theme pack for pidgin based on the GNOME set, you'd have that consistency.

 Your icons in my mplayer skin.

Yo!

I've made an mplayer skin ( http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ClearPlayer+Inverted?content=99275 ), and used some of your Gnome Colors - Human icons in it. I'm not realy sure what license should I gave to my skin. So I've written:

"ClearPlayer is GPL
GNOME/GNOME-Colors icons are GPL
Tango/Tango-based icons are CC-by-SA 2.5"

You okay with that?

 Changing Menu Icon

 by joshuajtl on: Feb 13 2009

I really love your theme. However I prefer the Gnome foot as a menu icon. I have replaced the '/.icons/gnome-brave/scalable/places/start-here.svg with the icon file of same name I like to use. I also removed all Colors menu icons from the rest of the icon directories. The icon on my menu bar remains the Colors menu icon... I don't get it.
Help?
Thanks

You can change the icon with Ubuntu-Tweak

http://ubuntu-tweak.com/

Once installed go to Applications > System Tools > Ubuntu Tweak then Desktop > GNOME

Thanks but I'd really rather not install an application just to change the menu icon when I should be able to do so without one.

Try rebuilding or deleting the cache. It's that file inside the icon folder named "icon-theme.cache".

Also, remember to change all instances of the icon, not just the scalable versions.. otherwise you won't really be doing anything, since usually the 22 or 24 px folders are the ones used for gnome-panel.

OKay, this is odd, I replaced every single menu icon file with the correctly sized menu icon I want to use, and tried removing the cache file. I still get the "Colors" menu icon.

These really complete my desktop experience. There was always something I didn't like about other icon themes, but not with this one. Thanks!
