Description:

I was tired of half-good themes with some icon from the Mac OS and others from some Crystal theme. So I decided to create my own theme based on what I like.
The "Ultimate Gnome" it's an icon theme for the GNOME linux desktop environment. It is a distro independent theme tested on Gnome 2.24.1 completely drawn with Inkscape. Every icon is drawn in a vectorial format (SVG/XML), and it is exported into a raster format (PNG) for fastest rendering on the screen. The work is published under a GPL (v2), hoping this will help those developers who need a GPL license to include this theme in their software.

More informations can be found at https://sites.google.com/site/ultimate-gnome/

Changelog:

2009/02/09 v0.5.1: Changed cut, paste and copy icons. PNG release for faster rendering and better quality.
If you found problems when installing, please read this https://sites.google.com/site/ultimate-gnome/help/cannot-reinstall-or-upgrade-theme

29/11/2008 There are some problems with GNOME 2.24.1 that cannot be resolved. I'm waiting for gnome to fix them. If you want to know more you could find some informations following this links: http://code.google.com/p/ultimate-gnome/issues/detail?id=14 and http://code.google.com/p/ultimate-gnome/issues/detail?id=19.

What do you think about improving that icon set to provide a glossy complementary icon set to the Murrine engine?

I seem to remember commenting that these icons would complement the new Murrine.

Newmoon, I hope you take him up on that suggestion. Cimi's new Murrine with transparency would look great with the Ultimate Gnome icons, and I'm eager to see how they look together.

Can you try to explain it better to me?

I've noticed that when I have this theme on whenever I try to save a picture in firefox, the "save as" window takes longer to scan the directories.

As i browse to the directory i want to save my pic in, all pictures in the directory are displayed in the window. The load time for this is longer compared to the human theme for example.

Has anybody else experienced this?

It's because they're SVG.
The png images weight more, but they're simply buffered and easy displayed.
The SVG icons are "rendered" there is more CPU usage with a completely SVG theme.

I'm thinking of adding all the PNG subformats but with the all PNG subformats it becomes a bit difficult to change or modify an icon in the theme (for a common user) because you have to export all the PNG from the modified SVG file.

Well done. Thanks for the theme.

The theme has a nice consistently look, a bit of retro to it, its a good touch. I can see the originality of the icons, all except maybe the folder, and I like effort put into it.

Keep up the good work.
