Description:

This script fixes the annoyances produced by some bad coded web pages. This just become notorious whenever you do use dark or black themes. e.g. black fonts over black backgrounds

Now it also helps -officially- fixing some issues with themes using dark toolbars.

I expect this to be a basis for all of us theme developers and users. Please help sending feedback and solving issues instead of playing alone: A single and simple solution is better for all of us!!

NOTE: If you don't have experience running scripts nor willing to read the instructions please don't use this script. However, I am willing to help you everytime no matter if you are new to GNU/Linux. Thank you.

Works for Epiphany, Seamonkey and Firefox

Check out the screenshots to learn from the examples.

Unpacking:
Quote:
tar xzvf darkfix-03.tar.gz
cd darkfix-0.3
./darkfix

Usage:
./darkfix [option] [browser]
Make a change at a time, with your browser closed. Open it and test the changes made. If you don't like what you have done:
./darkfix -r
rolls-back to the previous state.

Note:
If for any reason you can't execute correctly this script make sure it has appropriate execution permissions like this:
Quote:
chmod ug+rx darkfix

Some time in the near future I will add more features as "automagical skinning" and so. Enjoy it.

Changelog:

(0.3)
* Borrowed some CSS code from Firefox forums, it's very useful but some results aren t so pleasing yet when you need forcing (customizing) backgrund GUI settings.
* Simplified its use for people new to GNU/Linux and themes.
* Corrected some little issues (thanks dorfl))
* Changed some parts in preparation of the graphical version.

(0.1)
* Release/Testing Version

 Fuckhead

 by Debianized on: Feb 3 2008

@ code933k
It's nice that you're provinding a fix for dark themes but that doesn't give you the right to act like a fuckhead. If you can't be polite (on here or in the help files) don't post your stuff.

 Settle down

 by thevoiceless on: Feb 3 2008

Okay man, I'm sorry if I sounded rude or anything but you don't have to get so uptight. The only reason I say that your script is causing the issue with the way that page looks is because it didn't do it before I used your script. The issue with the fonts in the download statusbar also didn't happen until I used your script, and telling me to change font size/alignment/color for something that was perfect before is no excuse for a solution to something your script did.
Please, I'm not trying to criticize you and I'm sorry if I did, but I was just asking questions that the instructions you included did not answer.

Look, no body had been upset. It's just that whomsoever is posting above you doesn't know how figurative language works so he started insulting me and interpreting fallaciously what I said. "I am not your bitch" is developers jargon all the way...

Please read carefully my post and make the proper corrections to your Firefox that's all. Don't be confused by those erratic opinions.

I've put clearly what the script does and what not. There's specific help for your case as this doesn't have anything to do with the script. You see a white background because it is obviously what should happen, though the XUL error messages are incorrectly displayed with some themes and "I am not God" man.

Do you have changed the way that the messages are displayed or not?

Well in that case I'm sorry for misinterpreting what you said, but your "figurative language" was really not very apparent.
I would fix the issues if I'm having if I knew how, but I don't. And the only reason I said I think your script did it is because I didn't have these issues before I used it. In my first comment I wanted to know how to revert back to my original settings so that I could see if it was indeed the script that caused these changes.
As far as I know, the script made a backup of my original config in a .tar.gz somewhere? Please correct me if I'm wrong

Launch 'darkfix' with the previous command. It will show the PATH to your file just as it was done previously.

Follow the path (CD) and remove the files ending in css and tgz That's all.

Ah! Okay, thank you very much

Also, just an idea for future releases of the script: would it be possible to append your code to the end of the userChrome/Content files rather than replace them? That would be pretty nifty

Thanks for all your help

Good!! you have solved your problem. Thanks for your suggestion, indeed I've thought about this at the very principle but it's a little difficult covering the whole spectrum of setups one can expect.

Regarding your suggestion. I think that couldn't be possible because that is very very error prone and makes Seamonkey and Firefox slower. Also there's a lot of theme developers that use a lot of miscoding so erasing it looked as the best solution.

Though, there's always a backup... However I'll do a lot of cleaning and enhancements mainly focused on theme developers than final users. Perhaps including a settings file. Cheers.

 Dare I ask?

 by OzzyFrank on: Feb 3 2008

Now, I don't think anyone is my bitch, but I'd like to know if there is a way to back up settings before applying this... like a command that backs up the file(s) in question, just in case. Thanks (and maybe reply BEFORE you've listened to Morbid Angel, hehe)

Bah! I can't stop smiling with the intelligence behind your joke. That "debian something" looks like a big Troll. what I meant is that I have added a -r option (to roll back changes without 'human assistance') to the version 0.3 though the script obviously does backups and tells you were they are located since the first release (0.1) as this is the way it should be when one makes destructive changes.

 by kgpabel on: Feb 12 2008

Hi ,With Darkfix I fixed my firefox 2.0.0.13 running in ubuntu 7.10, I had a problem with the web color fonts (white font - white background) after install a black theme, just reading the documentation was enough.

Great work.

 Epiphany CSS Style

 by dorfl on: Feb 15 2008

Hi and thx for your script. Works fine for me.

I saw one error, when opening the custom css for Epiphany:

Quote:
/* Written by 'darkfix' if this is not working please
contact the author adding the offending page address */

input { background-color: #ffffff; color: #010101; }
select { background-color: #ffffff; color: #010101; }
textarea { background-color: #ffffff; color: #010101; }
html body { background-color: #ffffff; color: #010101; }
* { background-attachment: scroll !important;

The braces around the last style were not closed.

And as a remark: I added "color: #010101" to the last style, since many pages with white background don't specify a dark foreground color, but rely on the systems default. On systems with a light theme, this will work. On dark ones not.

Keep up the good work,
Philipp

 Re: Epiphany CSS Sty

 by code933k on: Feb 18 2008

Thank you very very much for your good feedback !! I'll check that and update the version 0.3 this very week.

By the way keep in account that the last one isn't "properly" a style but really a speed up for the scroll function. (This fix becomes notorious with some heavy and ugly styles + java in wordpress)

Any way thanks again for pointing out this stupid error of mine :D

 Uninstall

 Re: Uninstall

[CLEAN WAY]

Of course man, ./darkfix -r

This rolls back to the last change, no matter what...

You should make one change at a time, then open your browser (it must have been closed firstly) to check out if you have done what you were expecting for.

If it isn't: "./darkfix -r" goes to the last state.

[DIRTY WAY]

If you want to remove all the configs (check out the PATH printed by darkfix when you use it) and remove *.css *.tgz from there.

(That's unneeded anyway but... you know)

[IF YOU MEANT UNINSTALLING DARKFIX]

It doesn't install anything. Just remove the directory where you have uncompressed. Nothing is left in your system.

----------------
I hope this helps.

Regards.

 Re: Re: Uninstall

Very cool bro. I just wanted to make sure it would be easy to undo the changes if they don't work out. Going to give this a shot.

I love dark themes - easier on the eyes, cooler looking, consume less energy, better battery life on a laptop (slightly better), and black images tend to be smaller in filesize.

I hacked the Firefox chrome but there are still a couple things not working, like check boxes. Plus, Epiphany looks like crap on many sites with dark themes.
