Ok, forget that coment: the package seems to work just fine and icons size adapts accordingly.

Still great theme.

If it is no longer free then you should not be posting it here at all.

I wish this site had an edit feature.

This theme is under GPL which means that it is suppose to be free as in price and in copyright.

http://www.fsf.org/licensing/licenses/gpl.html

There is a big different between asking for donations and demanding them. Once you start demanding them then it is no longer for free and thus a commercial product.

Listen, I'm not trying to be a Jerk! I want elementary to be free just as much as you do. It will always be free as in speech. You can modify, and redistribute in any way you want.

As far as being under GPL, please see this:

I did say there is a big difference between asking for and demanding donations. I have no problem with wanting to get some money for your work. Maybe you should change the license type?

Recognize, that I am NOT charging for the theme in general. Only for the most recent version. In a sense, people who donate get a pre-release copy of elementary.

IF you don't want to donate 10 cents, then just wait a couple weeks. or who knows, somebody else could pay your way to the pre-release.

P.S.

What have you contributed to the community? : )

Also, the second-to-most-recent version will always be free as in beer.

And, if you solely donate $10 or more, I'll make every version free as in beer for you.

I'm not asking the world, here.

Say what you want, but you are holding this theme hostage. Whatever the word of the law may be, you are violating the spirit of this site and people are obviously upset.

"This theme is under GPL which means that it is suppose to be free as in price and in copyright."

Free as in price? Please, shut your mouth, and go read the GPL license, or better, FSF site, where Stallman itself tells the difference between "freedom" and "for free".

You clearly don't know what the fuck GPL is about, and you clearly are only more Linux user thinking Linux is freeware land.

Free as in Speech, not necessarily free as in Beer. The people in the linux world do not work to produce an OS and tools that are cheap. They often do, but that's just a welcome side effect. The idea is to produce things that have the source included and are editable, so you're not locked in, The idea that getting free stuff is the spirit of linux demonstrates an extremely limited understanding of the purposes of the GPL. There are many companies that make money selling Linux. Good luck to them. And why shouldn't an artist ask for fair compensation?

 Interesting

I can swear I saw OSX original icons in one of the distributed packages.

With all my respect isn't it too much to expect "donations" on selling propriatary icons beloning to apple inc? I will be glad to hear what they think about it, will be fun. (for your reference - dev package -> scalable -> apps )

I will pay 10 bucks for:
a) absolutely complete theme, meaning i dont want to inherit 10 different themes (I might not have) I just want to install it and EVERYTHING every single icon should be in this theme.
b) The theme should be HIG compatible (meaning the resizeable icons should be scaled down to 48, smaller icons should be different, in order to make them easely distinguishable)
c) The theme should NOT use other authors artwork - I can build theme from multiple artists on my own, thanks, I want some original art work. If another artwork is used the two (or more) themes should blend fine with each other!
d) the theme should NOT use/include propriatary icon work

In this case I might decide to support the artist.

if they say silver i choose gold..

Please point out the OS X icons that are sitting inside this theme, I'd love to remove them for you. I can't seem to find them :)

Thankyou for providing a nice list of things you want me to work for, This will be my goals for 2.0

The only dependency Elementary carries is GNOME. and it optionally inherits Tango just in case! although, I'm not sure inheriting Tango actually does anything, lol.

Also, some works are based off others works, yes. But I don't believe there are any direct rips of icons. Maybe for certain applications. But then again, how much sense does it make to draw a Firefox icon from scratch?

Again, I'm not asking for $10 individually. This is a community charge. And it is only for the NEWEST version. Think of it as paying for a pre-release copy. Once, the next version comes out, the second to newest is always free as in beer!

 GPL...

by mejogid on: Feb 28 2008

Score 50%

IANAL, but with the GPL you essentially have the choice of releasing GPL'd work with sources or keeping it for personal use *unless* you own the original copyright. If you'd made this all completely from scratch that would be fine (you can release "preview" releases under a proprietary license), but since a large proportion of these icons are modifications of GPL'd icons I don't believe you can package them with proprietary icons or release them in an encrypted package unless your provide unencrypted sources. At the very least, you can't distribute GPL'd (or GPL based) icons in an encrypted package and complain if someone else uploads them unencrypted.

The fact is there are a fair few people who will take issue with *demanding* donations (even if a free version remains available) - very few people successfully monetise GUI artwork even on traditionally closed platforms. I'm in no position to tell you how to act, but I would warn against annoying the community while standing on shaky legal standing and hoping for 'donations' from them.

I never said you couldn't redistribute them in any way you like. You can. The sources are available to download free as in beer. If there are proprietary icons in this package, I am not aware of it.

I'm not demanding a donation whatsoever. If you want the pre-released icons right now, there is a mandatory donation. Otherwise, just wait until they are publicly released! I don't understand what all the fuss is about.
