The lightweight Vista Menu implementation is compatible.
http://www.gtk-apps.org/content/show.php/XP+Start+Menu?content=93807

I may work on this in future, but if any python programmers out there want to take this over and improve it, please email me for the latest source.

INSTALLATION

-Install Dependencies:

sudo apt-get install python2.5 python-xdg python-cairo python-gconf python-xlib deskbar

-Download package from this page
-Extract to your desktop, and double click on the installer inside
-Right click on the gnome panel, and go to 'add to panel' and select vista menu

We need people to help make new themes and translate the menu to new languages! Please send me a message if you can help.

Changelog:

Beta 1.07: Includes new theme and fixes multiple program launching and command line errors
Beta 1.08: Basically a total rewrite!
Beta 1.08_1: Fixed Blue Wave theme.
Beta 1.08_2: More languages added.

 problem!!

 by p4inkiller on: Jun 23 2008

Score 50%

hey! lot of thanks. I really want to check this out, this start menu is what I've always thought gnome lacked of.
But I can't add the applet to the panel. this is the problem:
http://img58.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pantallazotq6.png

"the panel found a problem while loading ..." do you want to delete the applet from your config ?(whatever I click anything happens)

so, what can I do? I have the dependencies and I install it double clicking the script. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but didn't work.

thanks

I'm having that same problem too. I really like this menu, it goes well with my vista theme, I can't wait for a fix.

Can you please go to a terminal and enter Vista_Menu.py run-in-window
and then paste any output from that window in here.

Try reinstalling the menu, the problem seems to be that the menu didn't get fully installed. You could try running the installer (in the folder called installer in the setup package) from a terminal and see if you have and issues with being able to write to certain directories as root.
Otherwise, it might be a problem with your version of python xmlminidom. What distro/version of distro are you running?

Delete your .VistaMenuSettings.xml in your home directory (hidden file). It happens that some themes arent fully updated yet to support the new software.

This may help identify the problem:
Open a terminal, enter just 'Vista_Menu.py', press enter, and nothing should happen. But then try and add an instance of the menu to the panel and it will use the instance in the terminal and you should get some debug output.
Also, what distro/version are you using?

Try deleting the panel and recreating the panel. Check that there is a symbolic link from /usr/bin/Vista_Menu.py to /usr/lib/vistamenu/Vista_Menu.py

Just remove the 'deskbar' part, it is installed on ubuntu gutsy and up by default. The name has probably changed to what it is now.

Good idea, but it has planted when I wanted to change some configuration. And the French translation is not very good...

 Exellent Work

Everything works great beside:
- Blue Wave skin is not working for me
- Search button (over the recent items) is not working (maybe I should install some application?)
- I suggest to remove Games button and add something like Favorite Applications or Recent Applications
- I can help with polish translation

The blue wave theme not working is because I forgot to update the theme backend for that before I uploaded.

To see why your searchbar isn't working (probably dependencies), go to a terminal and enter Vista_Menu.py run-in-window and hit enter and paste the debug output here so I can figure out what it is.

I would very much appreciate a polish translation. My msn name is hughescih at hotmail com

I have plans to make the first page you see as the most commonly opened programs.
