Description:

An elegant and functional menu with many themes, not just vista.
Currently supported languages:
English, Czech, French, Spanish, Portuguese

THIS IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH UBUNTU 8.10 Intrepid Ibex
The lightweight Vista Menu implementation is compatible.

I may work on this in future, but if any python programmers out there want to take this over and improve it, please email me for the latest source.

INSTALLATION

-Install Dependencies:

sudo apt-get install python2.5 python-xdg python-cairo python-gconf python-xlib deskbar

-Download package from this page
-Extract to your desktop, and double click on the installer inside
-Right click on the gnome panel, and go to 'add to panel' and select vista menu

We need people to help make new themes and translate the menu to new languages! Please send me a message if you can help.

I want a different menu for Ubuntu but i cannot find one for XP. Why only Vista? Vista sucks >_> If you know a good place for a xp-like start menu, pls let me know ^.^ ty

This start menu is the nicest i have found so far tho btw

XP is one of the themes on the upcoming version of the menu, 1.08. It's been awhile in the making as I have a difficult job and alot of other stuff getting in the way of making it. If you want to try it out (it's fully function, just doesn't yet have a graphical settings window) then message me and i'll send it to you.

There isn't a button template other than the files that are in the package. The much improved version 1.08 of the menu is going to be released (along with it's debian package) in a few days however.
I'd be grateful if I could have your arch package linked on the main page here. Contact me with your msn name if you want to have the version 1.08.

Hi!
First of all, GREAT panel widget!!!! One of the best out there.

Unfortunately I'm running into a few issues:
- The menu is blank (no entries).
- The menu won't disappear once I open it.
- The start button has a white background if I have the Gnome Panel set to have an image background.

Is there a work-around or fix for these issues? Thanks!

The next version or two should fix the panel background issue.
However it sounds like you didn't install the dependencies listed in the readme file.
If doing that doesn't work, then run in a terminal Vista_Menu.py run-in-window
and post on this thread what any errors are.

go to your home directory, 'view hidden files' and delete .face (your user picture), which may be incompatible

Not sure if this is related, but it seems that not all icons are showing at the top when hovering over the right-hand links. These is inconsistent every-time I restart the VISTA-menu (sometimes it will display a certain link icon, sometimes it won't, seems to display about half of them only).

- If you run it from a terminal, do you get any errors opening and closing the menu?
- Are you running KDE alongside GNOME?

I don't exactly know what is causing it. However a vast number of changes have been made to the upcoming version that most likely will resolve this issue. If it still persists after I post version 1.08, then please let me know.

I use vista menu with ubuntu panel button in the top panel but the button doesn't appear correctly, also I can't see graphics settings and system commands in preferences
