Description:

It's idea of new gnome menu. I think the SLAB menu is not as good as it should be, this mockup is something between SLAB and Gnome Menu we have now.

CLICK "DOWNLOAD" to see launched menu, without changes given by actions with the cursor.

On the first screen there is example when a category is chosen.

On the second screen there are "utilities"- no "System" menu, because all configuration apps are included into one Gnome Control Center (something like we can install today, but it shows only apps enabled in menu)

There are no "places" menu, because you can choose devices from the center part of menu. You would be able to configure displayed stuff too.
On the third image- there is an example of editor. I've added a colours tab, where I want to give a choice of used colours or enable a system look.

When you place the menu on the bootom of the screen, "Session: Username" would be displayed on the top of the menu.

When the programm list would be too long, then the scrollbar will appear :)

This mockup needs GTK and Compiz being fully integrated, as you can see, there are some efeects under the panels and menu- menu style would depend on GTK and Compiz theme.

I hope you would like it :)

Icons used: NuoveXT
Wallpaper downloaded from web (I don't remember location) and improved a little bit :)

Idea is free ;) so if you are interested in creating this, just do it. I hope it will be included in GNOME in the future...

ATTENTION

For everyone who wants something like this, I aim to excite and disappoint.

Disappointment: this idea has not only been thought of...
Excitement: it's already been coded and released.

Bad news: it is aimed at Ubuntu (although it will run on any Gnome), and is a bit slow, though very usable.

It's called USP, Ubuntu System Panel. Get it here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=222546

It also looks like SLAB. The Menu used by SuSE's Gnome.

Well, it's not the same menu... Actually this is a menu and this from ubuntuforums is a menu, and here the similarity ends ;]

Actually, its pretty much identical in these areas:

1) search for programs
2) install
3) select by category
4) set fast launcher for favourites
5) System info

And it also has more features.

Admittedly, it does not have such a nice customization window, but most of the features are the same.

It's helpfull stuff, so they are included in most of menus.
If I have a choice: this menu and that one from ubuntuforums, I would choose the menu from here. Everyone uses what he/she like to :)

It's nice but .... is there a chance you might make a native (C) version of this? I hardly see the 10 MB hit being well worth a menu bar. GTK+ in native C would only cost you about a MB or so or even less.

Yeah, actually I didn't make this. I would agree, python was a mistake in this case. Also, although I have not studied the code, I would guess it is not done optimally.

Right, I was able to find that out on the Ubuntu forums. GREAT work though. I'd really like to see a desktop environment like this in future distributions of Linux.

KBFX is quite good, but:
"KBFX is an alternative to the classical K-Menu button and it's menu."
...not Gnome Menu or I don't find an information it's for Gnome too.

No, I don't think KBFX will port to Gnome. But we do need a "GBFX", lol

Interesting concept for those who hate to have multiple panels. Is this a stable download yet, or are there still alot of bugs involved? Would like to try it out on my gutsy ubuntu. By the ways how can I uninstall it if I do not like it.

Looking at this Gnome menu I want to learn C and C++ for Linux and help to create it. :) We can organize a group and make it.

well... good luck. I'am not as good as I should be in programming to create it. But if someone can do this there isn't any contradictions...
