Metacity Theme

Submitted:  Nov 13 2005
Updated:  Nov 16 2005

Description:

This Metacity theme is modelled after the GNOME mockup "A cleaner gnome mockup" by Gentleman. I like it a lot and tried to create the window theme using his graphics. It's my first Metacity theme so don't expect too much...

Here's the mockup:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=31128

Due to popular demand I uploaded a version with 3px wide frames.

There's also a XFWM4 port of the theme available, thanks to AnXa.
http://www.xfce-look.org/content/show.php?content=32353

Known problems:
If you use a version of Metacity prior to 2.12 please use the theme version with the 3px thick frame, otherwise the rounded corners will appear white. Metacity 2.12 and above displays both theme versions correctly.

Changelog:

0.1:
- initial version

0.2:
- changed button layout to be closer to the original

0.3:
- new graphics (from first mockup screenshot)
- transparency bug fixed

0.4:
- added shaded titlebar images for inactive windows

0.4.1:
- fixed wrong color for inactive frame
- alternative version with 3px wide frame added

Can we have bluecurve and human colored ones?

I know human colored but what exactly is bluecurve, can you give me an example? But the next thing I want to do is implement the bright versions of the mockup. I'll keep your wishes in mind though. ;)

I actually meant Bluecurve. http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=21237 although I'm sure you know it. So do you plan on a Human and/or Bluecurve?

I sure heard about Bluecurve but never actually used it so I was not sure what exactly you meant. An no, I currently have no plans to make Human/Bluecurve versions of it, sorry.

Dammit, I meant to say Clearlooks, not Bluecurve. Too bad.

I'm really liking this theme. The only thing that could possibly make this theme better is if the titlebar colours were picked up from the GTK theme.

This will probably give a more consistent look, I agree. That was not my intention though, I tried to recreate the original look of the mockup.

And you did an excellent job of it. But having it pick up the GTK theme would be a nice touch so it can be used with any GTK theme instead of having to find something grayscale to go with it. Otherwise this is one of my favourite Metacity themes. Good work.

I think it would look better if the dark line in the middle of the titlebar was either more tranparent (lightened), or spread out more (vertically), or both. It just looks too much like a line, and not rounded, IMO. Don't stop working on it! How about a maximized state (no round corners)?

Seems like the concept by Gentlemen included the desire for the theme to be usable. IMO, any metacity theme with a 1 px border is not usable. I change them all to a minimum of 3, but 4 is better, Just my 2 cents.

I actually like the title bar as it is. The whole theme was actually created to resemble the mockup images, that's why I also choose the small width of the frame. All the graphics were taken from the screenshots of the mockup, they were not done by myself.

many of my metacity themes appear to have a 1px border but really have 3 and 4px. How that is done is only seen in trans terminals
http://kwh.kernow-gb.com/~bvc/theme/screenshots/ish-green.jpg
or if the gtk bg[NORMAL] is diff from the bg on the metacity border.

actually ish is a bad example because it uses pixmaps. Edge series and EdgeSoft do not use pixmaps for the border, only color, which is faster.

 corners

by bmzf on: Nov 15 2005

The top corners look round but, if the cutout is tranparent, it's not working for me -- so I get weird looking whiteness. I agree with a window border of at least 3 pixels.

Maybe rounded bottom corners would look nice too. Nice so far.

Another user is having the same problem with the white corners on top. I'm clueless what causes this since they look fine for me, i.e. the corners are really transparent.

I was playing around with the windows while checking out this theme again and I noticed that the corners are fine when the window is shaded, but no so otherwise.
Maybe that can give you a clue as to what causes this problem.

i am fixate this change this:
distance name="left_width" value="1"
distance name="right_width" value="1"
distance name="bottom_height" value="1"

in "frame_geometry_normal" for this:

distance name="left_width" value="3"
distance name="right_width" value="3"
distance name="bottom_height" value="3"

And i am think about this problem and will be caused by the font size in the title bar.

PD: Sorry for my bad English.

 3px border

The 3px border seems to get rid of the corners problem. I'd make the borders the same color as the gtk theme.

Indeed, a width of 3px or more is needed to display the corners correctly. Really strange... :/
Thanks for mentioning!
