in gconf :
apps > panel > objects
search the main menu, put use_custom_icon to true and put your new image path in custom_icon.

i tried following both sets of instructions and i cant get it to work. where is the icon that the applications menu is loading?

"objects" is not a child of "apps > panel". The next level would be "default_setup" or "profiles", with "objects" being a child of each of those. But I tried changing both, and neither worked for me.

Do you have an SVG version? Ubuntu requires that all their icons be SVG.
