 GPL?

by knipknap on: Sep 26 2004

Are they really GPL'd? I have seen them on other sites (iconfactory.com, I guess) with a "Free for personal use" license.

Would be terrific for sure. Though not my flavor, I have to admit they are great, high quality, icons.

To be honest, when I first published the theme, I chose "Proprietary License", but I changed it 5 minutes later. I sent two email to the original author, and I had no response. So at my own risk, I figured he wouldn't mind. If any problems arise, I'll remove the theme. But then again, icon themes are for personal use.

Cheers.

'free for personal use' != GPL, even for iconsets.

For example, a GPL'd iconset could be used to help "theme" a corporate website. I think the original author might be unhappy if this were used in that kind of situation.

Well, I think this is serious. The author could sue your ass off without prior notice. Also, in some countries, this website (gnome-look.org) can be held responsible for not deleting such content.

I love GPL'd icons, because they can be repackaged and, for example, shipped with a Linux distribution.
But with most of the "Free for personal use" licenses this is a clear violation of the authors rights.

So, what exactly are you suggesting? Changing the license or removing the theme?
I think I'll just change the license at first.

Oh, and gnome-look.org CANNOT be held repsonsible for its content, as stated at the bottom of every page:

"All rights reserved. GNOME-Look.org has no liability for any content or goods on this site.
All contributors are responsible for the lawfulness of their uploads."

Oh well, if there are more reactions regarding the licnese, I'll have to remove the theme.

Unfortunately, it is not that easy. A page disclaimer does not always help. (To be more specific: In the most countries it won't.)

You changed the license, that makes it legal (as long as the author allowed repackaging).

Anyway, as an independent bystander I was only trying to help. You are free, have fun and do whatever you think is best and right.

Make the bottom panel 48px, turn off resizing to full window, and make it transparent 0%. Add icons as you wish.
The desktop background can be found here:

And the nautilus pattern is in the default palette, I just added it for the screenie :)
I'm happy you like my desktop :)
