Description:

Some people from the Linux Mint forums may recall I once tried to make a GTK3-compatible version of Shiki-Colors (which ultimately turned into Zukitwo-Colors due to a lack of knowledge or experience of theme styling). After working on the Zukitwo-Colors themes (as well as Zukitwo-Primary-Colors and Mint-Z Improved) for some time I decided to try my hand at it again using the knowledge I've gained since I started.

These themes are my attempt to make Shiki-Colors compatible with GNOME and GTK 3, borrowing the Zukitwo-Colors themes and altering them slightly to better match the look of Shiki-Colors, and altering the GTK 2 themes slightly to better match what I could achieve with the GTK 3 themes. I've also made GNOME Shell and Cinnamon themes (borrowed from Zukitwo-Colors and altered as I felt necessary) that I feel fit the overall look and feel of the Shiki-Colors themes.

Unfortunately I have a very limited understanding of how the Mutter XML code works and how different it is from the older Metacity XML code, so I haven't yet made an updated window manager theme.

I hope anyone who missed the old, GTK2-only Shiki-Colors will find these to be an adequate update. There are some small differences between my themes and the original versions (mostly due to an inability to include certain features from the GTK2 themes in the GTK3 themes, so for consistency between them I removed those features), however, I believe those differences do not detract from the overall look and feel of the themes.

NOTE: The GTK3 and GNOME Shell themes require GNOME/GTK 3.4 and Unico 1.0.2 to work correctly. These themes will not work correctly with GNOME/GTK 3.6 and will not be updated to work with them, due to GTK 3.6 requiring image assets for styling many elements.

Thanks! I can't really take all the credit though, since all I'm really trying to do is update the old Shiki-Color themes to work with GNOME and GTK 3.

 Shiki Reborn!!!

This is wonderful!

Yesterday I made a custom Shiki-Blues theme for myself using Shiki-Colors-Metacity and Ambiance Blue GTK themes, but some colors didn't match 100% as I'm a total stranger in this field ;-)

However, I can make a very small contribution to add Unity support -- please see the file at: http://minus.com/lehFUtH0V57gL

Also the only issue I've seen so far is the blue background color of Chrome/Chromium browser tab bar, which can probably be fixed easily.

Thanks for this great theme!

Heh, thanks for the Unity support, I wasn't aware all it took was a folder full of images for the window control buttons... I appreciate that though.

I suspect the issue with Chrome/Chromium is because I haven't updated the GTK2 theme code with the Chrome-specific bits many newer themes have had to add to properly theme it. I'll look into that as soon as I can and hopefully get an update posted soon to include that and your Unity buttons.

Bah, apparently there is a little more to the Unity styling than *just* the buttons, I forgot about the Unity code already included with the GTK 3 themes I borrowed...

As I don't have Unity installed I will have to rely on people who do use Unity to inform me of any possible tweaks the theme may need to better match the overall look and feel of Shiki-Colors, otherwise I'll just leave it alone for now and at some point in the future consider installing Unity myself and taking a look at it.

I don't know anything about theme coding.
I just added your theme and then my folder into it, and it worked (probably because Zukitwo theme has this built-in).
For me this is better than having different (inconsistent) window buttons when applications are maximized in Unity.
The same applies to Unity dashboard buttons.
I think Unity developers have not (yet) integrated them with the Metacity window theme.
For me this looks inconsistent, and I always copy the respective button images into its folder for a more consistent look.

I did take a quick look and it appears only the window control buttons on the panel can be set by the themes, there doesn't appear to be any way currently to change the dash buttons without replacing the default assets. I do appreciate you giving me those at least, it saved me a bit of work I might not have clued into.

 Unity Dash buttons

I don't know if and how this can be incorporated into a Metacity or GTK theme, but you can also have Shiki buttons on Ubuntu Unity Dashboard if you copy the icon files in the file below into /usr/share/unity/5/ folder:

I'll have to take a look at some other themes that support Unity to see if they somehow add Unity Dash buttons to the theme, if they can then I'll look into adding them to my theme, since I'd rather not replace the default assets with custom ones.

I'm glad you like what I've done so far. Hopefully I'll be able to tweak and polish the theme some more (possibly with some help) and really make it look good, right now a lot of the theme's GTK 3 appearance is borrowed and unmodified from the Zukitwo-Colours themes I derived from Zukitwo-Dark, and doesn't quite match up perfectly with the Shiki-Colors GTK 2 appearance.

I also had to tweak the GTK 2 theme to remove some things I couldn't do with GTK 3 (the animated striped progress bar and the handle stripes on the sliders and scroll bars in particular), and if I can find some way to revert those modifications and include them in the GTK3 theme I'd really like to do so.

I imagine this is going to be an ongoing project for quite some time, doing little things here and there until it all comes together.

My limited experience in GTK2 theming has come directly from butchering other people's themes ( thanks, open source! )... Haven't done much with GTK3, but have you seen Clearlooks-Phenix? It manages to keep the stripes, scrollbar slider handle lines, trough buttons ( I still like arrow buttons on the scrollbar.. Just me ), etc. It looks like it incorporates some SVG images to accomplish this. Perhaps a closer look at that theme could help.

I'll take a look at it. I'd honestly rather not rely too heavily on images if I can avoid it, but if it's the only way to match the look of the GTK 3 themes to the GTK 2 themes without removing those aspects of the GTK 2 themes then that may be what I have to do.

I did use the Murrine version of Shiki-Colors as the base of these themes, since the themes I borrowed the GTK 3 code from (Zukitwo-Colors) also used Murrine for the GTK 2 styling. Clearlooks-Phenix appears to be a revival effort for the default Clearlooks theme, but if it's done well enough I may be able to use it as a better base for the GTK 3 code and switch the GTK 2 themes to the Clearlooks versions.

I know what you mean as far as images.. Just doesn't seem as dynamic. For what it's worth, at least they are SVG, so it's pretty much still just XML code AFAIK. Still, I use my own custom mod of Shiki on my older Ubuntu 10.10 GNOME 2 install, and I'd miss the ease of being able to easily change colors and the like. Every now and then I mess around with this stuff, so while there are a ton of those who are much more skilled/experienced than myself, I'll be sure to share if I make anything useful.

Either way, I'd say quality-wise that this could already be a default theme for a distro. Using it with Mint 13 / Cinnamon right now.

GNOME Shell, Cinnamon (Linux Mint's fork of GNOME Shell) and GTK3 all use CSS for theme styling rather than XML.

I took a closer look at Clearlooks-Phenix, and unfortunately it would take a lot more work than I could invest at this time to make it work as the base for a GTK3 version of the Clearlooks-based Shiki-Colors. Most of the images are specifically coloured for the Clearlooks theme, and a lot of the elements (such as buttons, borders, etc.) all use specific colour definitions rather than being defined as a shade of the background and selected background colours.

That said, there may be some code from the theme I could use to help make my GTK 3 themes better match the Murrine-based GTK 2 themes. In particular, the stepper code and progressbar code may be useful.

I'll probably do some tinkering over the weekend and see what I can come up with.

Loving the Shiki Nouveau Brave theme (previous theme I used was Zukitwo Brave) prefer this one as it's not so dark, yet still dark enough, especially noticeable on the panel. +1

The Zukitwo-Colors themes started out matching the colour schemes of the Shiki-Colors themes, I ended up darkening the titlebars and menubars (and anything else using the dark_bg_color defined in gtk.css) after someone asked how they might do it for their own fork of the Zukitwo-Human theme, since I liked the way it looked when I tested it myself.

I had recently considered reverting the colour schemes back to those of the Shiki-Colors themes, but I decided to leave them as they are and instead work on updating Shiki-Colors to work with GTK3 instead, as I had initially intended back when I ultimately settled with making Zukitwo-Colors.

 YES!

Many, many thanks for creating this theme. Zukitwo Colors just didn't cut it for me, and the thing that drove me crazy about those themes was the the corresponding Xfwm themes didn't seem to have borders on the sides or bottom, which, in some situations, made it hard to visually tell where the window on top ended and the window behind it began.

Not to mention, I created several GTK-2 themes of my own, but when it comes to GTK3, I don't know jack, and I've been hoping that something like this would be done, and Shiki-Colors has always been my favorite series of themes. Granted, I do miss the animated progress bars, but I can live with that until you figure out how to do that in GTK3 (I think the MediterraneanNight GTK-2/3 theme has this, so I think it can be done).

Excellent work, my friend! :-) Voted GOOD, installed 'em all (for whatever mood I should find myself in) and am already using the Human (orange) version.

I'm glad you like these!

I don't know why the Zukitwo-Colors XFWM themes wouldn't have window borders, I borrowed the XFWM theme from the Zukitwo-Dark theme I based them on and recoloured everything as necessary to make them match the colours of the Metacity/Mutter themes... I don't really use XFCE (only somewhat recently installed it to fix panel-related stuff with my Zukitwo-based themes...) but I'll double-check and see if everything's working properly... It may be that the original Zukitwo-Dark theme doesn't have proper window borders, in which case I'll need to pass this issue along to the original theme's author so he can fix it...

I'll take a look at MediterraneanNight and see what I might be able to do. If indeed it does have animated progressbars in GTK3 and the code can be easily borrowed and tweaked to fit, I should be able to implement animated progressbars in these themes.

To be honest, as for the Xfwm themes, instead of using the ones you've supplied, I'm using the ones from Debian's repos (I'm running Crunchbang Waldorf but replaced its default Openbox desktop with Xfce), and as I recall, I never had any usability issues with those. To me, the Shiki-Colors series of themes were the PERFECT themes and were themes I always found myself coming back to, and I'm happy to see that you brought 'em back in a form that also works with GTK3 apps. Naturally, I'll be keeping a close eye on any updates to the Shiki-Nouveau series of themes.
