Updated:  May 5 2014

Description:

NOTE:
======
Unfortunately, after years of Gnome3, even minor updates of GTK+ or Gnome-Shell break themes and waste hours of work.

GnomishGray is a silver gray theme for GTK3. It also contains a matching GTK2 theme, that depends on the latest Murrine and Pixmap engines.

*** Current Dependencies ***

GTK3 = 3.12.X (may not work with versions < 3.8)
gtk2-engines-murrine >= 0.98.1.1 (for GTK2)
gtk2-engines-pixbuf >= 2.24.10 (for GTK2)
Metacity >= 2.34 (for GTK2)

*** Important Notes ***

(1) Ubuntu users should disable "overlay-scrollbar" before using this theme, otherwise they might see blackened widget areas (a bug in overlay-scrollbar with a won't-fix tag). See https://help.ubuntu.com/12.10/ubuntu-help/unity-scrollbars-intro.html

(2) Debian users may have to patch Cairo with 'server_side_gradients.patch' (bug #616308), which is included in other distros by default.

(3) You won't need the source package unless you want to modify the theme or make a deb or rpm package from it.

(4) Because GTK3 still has its limitations in handling of transparent bg colors, during drag-n-drop, dragged widgets with transparent bg colors are temporarily darkened until dropped. Apart from this minor issue and since changes in Gnome are whimsical, if you've found any problem with the latest version of the theme (at dA), please report it here. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for this great looking theme.
Several suggestions for development:
1) GTK theme to include a gray ubuntu unity top panel and Chrome/Chromium tab bar background as well.
2) Same metacity window buttons to be used in ubuntu unity and dash as well.
BTW what's the name of the icon theme used in the screenshot?

Thank you, Sadi, for your suggestions.

You're right; it would be good if the background of Chromium's tab bar could be changed without affecting other aspects of the (GTK2) theme. I'll see that through.

I enjoyed Ubuntu 4 years ago and I respect it but, being a Debian user, I couldn't make or test a Unity theme, unfortunately.

The icon theme is nouveGnome; I just changed the color of its folder icons to make them more compatible with this theme.

 Changing theme

Hane some questions. What is the difference between source and theme? If I understand right if I unpack source to ~./themes it will work the same as theme in package(or how do you call it)?

Since GTK-3.4, there's a possibility to make a binary file that includes all assets and CSS files. It seems that in this way, not only the theme is more compact but also it's loaded more easily.

The source includes a file named "gtk" (the name isn't important) that can be compiled with this command to create "gtk.gresource" as the core file of the theme: glib-compile-resources gtk

On the other hand, I update the theme in dA even when the changes I make are small but I update the source only when there are considerable changes.

First download the source.

The horizontal and vertical progress bars are SVG images with the names of prgrss.svg and prgrssv.svg. You could open them with Inkscape and change their colors as you wish.

For menu items, find the following block in gtk-widgets.css:

.menuitem:hover,
.menu .menuitem:hover {
....
}

The color and gradient are defined as background-image.

After making your changes, compile the theme as I explained above and replace "gtk.gresource" in the installation folder. You should restart apps to see their new look.

Thank's man. First time I see some detailed instructions about customizing gtk3 theme.

Do I have to be in the /GnomishGray_source folder or in some subfolder when compiling theme by executing command glib-compile-resources gtk?

You're welcome.

Yes, you should open the terminal inside the folder "gtk-3.0" in the source folder.

These blocks:

.menubar {}
.toolbar {}
.view:insensitive, .view {}
NautilusPlacesSidebar .cell:selected, NautilusPlacesSidebar *.cell:selected {}
NautilusWindow .sidebar {}

If you want to make a new theme, you should play with many parameters. It's a hell of job but could be rewarding ;)

By the way, have you found the way to increase text font under these icons in gnome-shell?

What do you mean by messaging system of this site -- to make subscription on this topic?

Just put the cursor on my avatar and you'll see "Send a message". No extra subscription needed.

> By the way, have you found the way to increase...

You surely know that your screenshot isn't related to the GnomishGray shell theme. However, the font size is determined in the file gnome-shell.css belonging to the theme. Search for ".overview-icon", and "font-size".

Just a correction: apparently the name "gtk" for that file is important.
