GTK 3.x Theme/Style

Depends on  GNOME 3.x

Submitted:  Dec 2 2011
Updated:  Jan 23 2013

Description:

NOTE:
======
Unfortunately, after years of Gnome3, even minor updates of GTK+ or Gnome-Shell can still break themes and I have no time for this anymore. Updates will come but not as frequently as before.

GnomishDark is a clean dark theme for GTK3, based on the Adwaita engine, plus a matching GNOME-Shell theme.

It also contains a GTK2 theme, that depends on the latest Murrine and Pixmap engines.

*** Current Dependencies ***

GTK3 = 3.6.X
GNOME3 = 3.6.X
gnome-themes-standard = 3.6.X
gnome-shell = 3.6.X (for GNOME-Shell)
gtk2-engines-murrine >= 0.98.1.1 (for GTK2)
gtk2-engines-pixbuf >= 2.24.10 (for GTK2)
Metacity >= 2.34 (for GTK2)

*** Notes ***

1) Ubuntu users could disable "overlay-scrollbar" if they want to have the original scrollbars of the theme. See https://help.ubuntu.com/12.10/ubuntu-help/unity-scrollbars-intro.html

2) Don't forget to take a look at the file "README" in the theme folder. It contains useful tips for LibreOffice, Firefox, Epiphany, etc.

3) You won't need the source package unless you want to modify the theme or make a deb or an rpm package from it.

4) The panel font is Bitstream Charter, provided by xfonts-scalable in Debian based systems and by xorg-x11-fonts-Type1 in Fedora, but it's not necessary.

5) Light monochromic icons go well with this theme. I've made the gray version of nouveGnome for it: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/nouveGnome?content=125474

Thanks! I just like to find a way to make the corners of the Nautilus view rounded.

Looks really nice.

Very much so, I tweaked just a couple things, I run into the same with every theme. The status icons are always spaced too far apart. This is what I do to correct that:
  • .panel-button {
    -natural-hpadding: 3px;
    -minimum-hpadding: 3px;

  • I also like the effect when normal font is chosen & bold is applied when it hovers:
  • .panel-button:hover {
    background-gradient-direction: vertical;
    background-gradient-start: rgba(255,255,255,0.4);
    background-gradient-end: rgba(71,71,71,0.4);
    transition-duration: 250;
    font-weight: bold;

    Add this below the #panel entry and you're bottom panel from Mint will inherit the theme in the top panel (might be a cleaner way to do this but it works):

  • #bottomPanel {
    background-gradient-direction: vertical;
    background-gradient-start: rgba(88,88,88,0.7);
    background-gradient-end: rgba(0,0,0,0.6);
    color: rgba(255,255,255,0.98);
    border-top: 0px;
    border-left: 0px;
    border-right: 0px;
    height: 24px;
    box-shadow: 0px 3px 12px rgba(0,0,0,0.9);
    font-family: MintSpirit, cantarell, ubuntu, serif;
    font-size: 10pt;
    }

  • *font-family of your choosing

    nice work.
    wish it didnt have the blue in it.
    too many GTK3 themes with these funky blue colors.
    I think it speaks volumes about the mindset the world is in..
    all depressed and sad.. lol

    All this blue feels too much like windows or mac.

    Still, great work.
    All these themes with blue in them though, prevent me from ever using them. :/

    As a matter of fact, I made it without that blue first but it seemed a little dull to me. And blue isn't a sad color in all cultures ;) However, thanks for your comment.

    I agree about the blue. This is excellent work and I'm sure you can think of a way to implement a different color? For example, a medium green or yellow even?

    Keep up the great work!

    Let's be more specific. Do you mean the blue in progress bars and radio\check buttons? If people don't like them, I could use white and grey.

    Yes, those, and white wouldn't be bad either :). Other than that this theme IS amazing, which were being specific, I specifically love the faded right click menus.

    Since you keep working on it maybe you want ideas? The older style right click menu you see in firefox could use improved, but I love this theme anyways :D

    Here, Firefox's right click menus are like other GTK2 apps, i.e. white text on dark grey bg. I use '~/.mozilla/firefox/<SOME_CHARS>.default/chrome/userChrome.css' with this in it:

    menubar{
    color: white ! important;
    }

    I did that but I had to create the css, and I see how it changes the menu bar.

    I was wondering if you could make the gtk2 right click menu look the same as the gtk3 one, with the fade. Wasn't that possible with gtk2?

    GTK3 theming potential is much more than that of GTK2. Perhaps one could give a png bg to GTK2 menus but that would require the old pixmap engine with its extra load. Anyway, GTK2 apps will be replaced by GTK3 ones sooner or later.
