Description:

These themes started as a project to create a colourful, GTK3-compatible theme set reminiscent of Shiki-Colors. Since I have no real GTK2 or GTK3 theme design or creation experience, I borrowed a well-designed theme I had been using since I started using GNOME 3, Zukitwo-Dark, and tweaked it until it resembled Shiki-Colors while retaining the Zukitwo look and feel.

This theme set contains GTK2, GTK3, GNOME Shell and Cinnamon themes in all 7 colours from Shiki-Colors (Brave, Dust, Human, Illustrious, Noble, Wine and Wise), as well as colour-neutral GNOME Shell and Cinnamon themes (Zukitwo-Colors) and Metacity/Mutter and XFWM themes for Dust (Zukitwo-Dust) and the rest (Zukitwo-Colors). (Zukitwo-Dust has separate Metacity/Mutter and XFWM themes as part of its colour-scheme.)

I recommend using the GNOME-Colors icons themes with this theme set, since these themes were created with the intention of being a GTK3-compatible alternative to Shiki-Colors, and fit very well with the corresponding icon themes.

NOTE: The GTK3 and GNOME Shell themes require GNOME/GTK 3.4 and Unico 1.0.2 to work correctly. These themes will not work correctly with GNOME/GTK 3.6 and will not be updated to work with them, due to GTK 3.6 requiring image assets for styling many elements.

 Solid work!

Hello there! Solid work with these themes. I really dig them. I'm curious if you can help me with something. While I love the color variations with these themes, I'd like to make the colored highlight function darker. Take "Human" for example. The orange I'd like to change. What entries do I have to change for that? I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks for any help!

There are a few different places you'll have to look:

For the GTK2 themes, you'll need to go to the theme's gtk-2.0 folder, open gtkrc, and on line 14, change the hex value for selected_bg_color to the darker shade you wish to use. Everything else can be left as is.

For the GTK3 themes, you'll need to go to the theme's gtk-3.0 folder, open gtk.css, and on line 13, change the hex value for selected_bg_color (making sure to keep the semicolon at the end). You'll also need to open settings.ini and change the hex value for selected_bg_color there as well.

For the GNOME Shell theme it's a little more complicated, since there isn't one easy-to-find declaration of the colours. I can explain how I did it though:
- Go to the theme's gnome-shell folder and open gnome-shell.css in a text editor with a find and replace tool (I used gedit and will write instructions assuming that you will as well...).
- Go to line 171 and copy the first three numbers (and the commas between them) in the rgba colour declaration.
- Paste that into the "search for" field of the replace dialog, then enter the rgb values for the colour you wish to replace it with in the "replace with" field.
- Hit the "replace" button to automatically replace every instance of that colour declaration with your new colour (there should be 11 instances in total).
- Do the same thing with the rgba colour declaration on line 172, ideally replacing that colour with a slightly darker colour than you used on line 171 (for a fancy gradient effect).

I hope that helps you out. If you need more help or something clarified, feel free to message me and I'll see what I can do.

Nice! I got it. I had known about the first two entries, but the settings.ini was one I missed. Thanks for that!

I guess my only other curious theme question would be in regard to Nautilus. I love themes with a dark side bar. I'm also curious about darkening the top menu bars where the title bar is, etc. I think much darker title bars would make it blend nicer with Gnome Shell already having the black bar at the top. Any insight on that? I figured I would just have to import a series of png's into gimp and likely colorize them darker. Any thoughts on that?

The only images the metacity theme uses are for the window buttons (menu, minimize, maximize and close), everything else is XML code. There is a little bit of work involved in changing the colours, but I've already done it a few times so I think I can guide you through it:
- Go to the metacity-1 folder in Zukitwo-Colors and open metacity-theme-3.xml in gedit
- Open the replace dialog (it'll make this much easier and faster than hunting each value out individually)
- There are three hex values you'll need to change, #666666, #525252 and #3c3c3c (case is unimportant), enter each value in the "search for" field, enter the hex value you wish to replace it with in the "replace with" field, and hit the "replace" button to replace every instance of those values with the new values.

If you're planning to darken the titlebar, I might recommend replacing #666666 with #444444, #525252 with #303030, and #3c3c3c with #101010. (I just did as a test and it doesn't look half bad...) Regardless of exactly what values you do use, though, you'll also need to change the value of menu_color (on line 19) in the other themes' gtkrc files (excluding Zukitwo-Dust) and dark_bg_color (on line 44) in their gtk.css files (also excluding Zukitwo-Dust) to the hex value you replaced #3c3c3c with, that way the menu bar blends into the title bar properly.

You may wish to darken the bottons a touch to better fit the darker title bar, but I'll leave that up to you.

Wow - you're quick. Thanks for the fast response! I tinkered around with the settings you suggested and dannng that looks good. I just love the darker bar at the top. The contrast is very appealing to my eye.

I also edited the hex value of the orange, but I'm still toying with that. It's amazing how a few hex notches on the color scale can totally tip the balance from "too light/washed out" to "whoa, way too much".

Also - did you mean line 44 above? Line 43 is bg_color, whereas 44 is fg_color.

I'm also confused over why you said I'd have to edit the other themes except Dust. The only theme I'm tinkering with is Human. I'm not intending to change the whole fleet of Zukitwo-Colors themes to match, just one. I assume I'm doing things right then?

Anyway, this is looking super sharp. I've always loved both Zukitwo and Shiki but I prefer the colors to be a bit bolder and stand out more than what these themes defaults are. When I get to a point where I think my modifications are finished I'll throw the finished product your way so a designer's eye can check it out.

Also, if you have any insight on a dark side bar for Nautilus, I'm all ears. Your help is very much appreciated! Thanks again!

Yeah, you're right, it's line 43, not 44, I goofed up...

If you're only planning to use Human then you can leave the other themes alone. I only mentioned what I did because the Zukitwo-Colors Metacity theme is meant to be used with all of the colours except Zukitwo-Dust (which has its own Metacity theme), and darkening the Metacity theme would require the menubar colour to be darkened for all of the themes (except Dust, of course) if you wished to use any of the other themes at any point.

As far as darkening the Nautilus sidebar, you can do that by editing the nautilus.css file in the apps folder in the gtk-3.0 folder in the theme folder and editing the background-color on line 82 to whatever colour you would prefer to use. (If you're aiming to match the menubar color, you can easily change it from @bg_color to @menubar_color, if you're aiming for something else, you'll may have to use rgba to set your desired colour. Keep in mind, if you set a fairly dark colour, you'll also have to add a line after that to set a lighter text colour so you can still read the text. That can be done with color: @dark_fg_color;)

Very nice my friend. Your patience with helping me is very appreciated.

I've gone up and down the color choices and so far there's only one thing I'm trying to crack yet... It's the highlighted yet inactive color on the Nautilus sidebar. See: http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/9215/screenshotat20111117084.png

If you notice, Downloads is highlighted as the active window on the right. Yet my mouse cursor is over Pictures. I edited the D8D8D8 entry in settings.ini but it changes EVERYTHING, including the highlighted color over Pictures. Other than that, I dig the color choices. I sent you a PM with some additional questions if you have a minute later on.

Thanks again!

Screenshot 1: Zukitwo-Brave w/ gnome-brave icons
Screenshot 2: Zukitwo-Dust w/ gnome-dust icons.
Screenshot 3: Zukitwo-Human w/ gnome-human icons.

There's a link to the GNOME-Colors icon theme package in the "Links" section of the description.

 Xfwm themes

Well done, my friend!

However, since you haven't included Xfce themes with these themes, I took matters into my own hands and created my own this morning before coming to work, darkening them in order to preserve the coherent look that was present with Shiki-Colors, for which Xfwm themes were made available.

The Xfwm themes I've created to go along with your GTK 2/3 themes are available online at:

I have to admit I never really considered adding XFWM themes to my theme packages, since I don't use XFCE at all. lassekongo83 did create XFWM themes for the original Zukitwo themes some time ago, though, so I suppose if I really wanted to I could grab those and tweak them as necessary for my themes. Keep watching and in the next few days or so I should have some updates posted with XFWM themes added, tweaked as necessary from the original Zukitwo themes.

Help with some applet bugs on GTK2

Hello!

I've installed this nice GTK3-GTK2 theme and it is great. I like it.

But there are few bugs with some applets: some XFCE applets (GTK2) appears so white, and one of them is unusable, cause it appears as a white block instead showing its colors.

You could see the bugs here:

http://www.pasteall.org/pic/show.php?id=28480

If you could help me to solve them, it will be nice!

Thank you!

You're not the first to point this out to me... Unfortunately I'm not sure how to correct this problem. I would recommend grabbing and checking out the original Zukitwo themes (specifically, Zukitwo-Dark, the theme this set is derived from... there's a link to the original themes in these themes' description) and seeing whether or not they exhibit the same behaviour. If so, I would recommend informing the original themes' author so he/she can make the necessary changes to fix the problem. From there, I can update my themes with the same fix and everything can be well again,

I have installed the original Zukitwo theme and i've proved the bug is from Zukitwo.

All zukitwo themes have this little bug.

I think is a great idea you tell him this issue and maybe you could solve together for all themes.

Thank you very, very much.

I suppose I can pass the word along at least.

I don't really fully understand exactly what does what with regard to the GTK 2 themes (or to the GTK 3 themes for that matter), most of the tweaks/improvements I made were trial-and-error, and most of the real work I did was to the GTK 3 themes anyway, since I use GNOME 3 and intended these themes mainly for that environment.

I updated my Arch box to Gnome 3.4 and the theme is broken: black text turns white etc. Dunno if it is due to Gnome 3.4 or Unico 1.0.2... I hope you will find the time to do an update soon because this is a great addition to the normal Zukitwo themes.

I am aware of certain rendering problems when using Cairo 1.12 (full-black elements being mistakenly rendered as white) and with GTK 3.4 and Unico 1.0.1 (text boxes and other elements using the Unico engine are not properly rendered, suggesting that GTK 3.4 does not properly utilize the Unico engine. Unfortunately Debian does not have Unico 1.0.2 so I cannot verify if the problem would still exist with the newer version). These problems do not appear to be with the theme itself, but rather with the various tools/libraries responsible for rendering the theme.

I would suggest trying the original Zukitwo themes and seeing if they also display the same issues on your system. If so, informing lassekongo83 about them may lead to better information than I can provide, as well as a potential fix should there in fact be something about the theme that causes the various tools/libraries to fail to render it correctly.

I've updated the GTK3 theme to match the latest version of Zukitwo, which was just released today. The updated version works with GTK 3.4 and Unico 1.0.2, hopefully this will fix those problems you were having previously. Let me know if you still see any problems, specifically with GNOME Shell, since my GNOME Shell is still at 3.2 and doesn't support the modifications made to Zukitwo-Shell for GNOME 3.4.

Yeah, if the issue exists in the original Zukitwo themes, it will probably show up in mine as well. Mine are mostly a recolouring of the original themes, plus some minor modifications to make certain elements appear the way I like, similar to how Shiki-Colors looks for GTK 2.

If you let the author of the original Zukitwo themes (lassekongo83) know about the problem perhaps he might be more able to find a way to fix it, which I could then implement in my themes as well. Unfortunately I don't fully understand how everything works, most of my modifications were trial-and-error until they worked.
