Updated:  Aug 22 2014

Description:

Here are two icon sets with different flavors:

(1) nouveGnome is a colorful icon set compatible with most light GTK themes.

(2) nouveGnomeGray is a gray icon set made for dark GTK themes. Being mostly hollow and light gray, its icons are designed for use ONLY against sufficiently dark backgrounds. It is made based on nouveGnome.

The mime type differentiation of the colorful set is a little more than that of its gray counterpart.

Changelog:

...

2/27/2014
===========
Added some app icons to nouveGnomeGray.
Made nouveGnomeGray's common emblems yellow for them to be instantly recognizable.
Made lots of symlinks for non-Gnome, GTK-based DE's (which I had neglected before).

3/19/2014
===========
NO CHANGE to nouveGnome.
Changes to nouveGnomeGray:
Added some symlinks for Ubuntu;
Differentiated some common audio/video mime types.

8/21/2014
===========
NO CHANGE to nouveGnome.
Changes to nouveGnomeGray:
Added some icons (for Enlightenment).
Added a few action icons for Thunar and Xfburn.
Added and changed some emblems.
Added emotes.

Oh, that isn't related to the icon theme but to a graphical rendering problem that happens only with Pidgin. I sometimes see it here too, sometimes not, but only with Pidgin.

If you have an nVidia driver, you're lucky because with its previous versions (< 280.13) the notification area was a total mess.

We have to wait and see if later versions of Pidgin, GNOME-Shell or nVidia driver will solve this problem.

I could reply in German but let others be informed too :)

By the way, that pidgin icon doesn't belong to this theme. Pidgin uses its own icon.

Thanks for your comment.

I left app icons to be colorful because every new app might bring its colored icon, which wouldn't match the gray ones. However, I have plans to create gray icons for all GNOME apps I know.

 How about a dark grey

by inverting the grey icons you can create a dark grey icon set. you should be able to just batch process the whole theme.

Thanks for the suggestion. Because the icons of the gray set are mostly hollow and have thin shadows, if I made them dark gray their looks would be partially distorted. And after all, they're made for use against dark backgrounds.

The reason I ask for a dark grey, is to use against light backgrounds.

I understand that. Making a dark set from nouveGnome requires a lot of free time I don't have at the moment but I might make a dark set in the future. BTW, personally I prefer colorful icons with light themes.

 Good Work

I like the grey icons as they are easily 'colourized' with a simple script, well done

I found some ImageMagick scripts (Fred's) that can colorize gray images but the problem with such scripts is that they also colorize shadows.

save this to a file in the top level of the extracted icons folder make executable and run it.
just change the relevent numbers, I am using the yellow version at this moment.
The drop shadows dont seem to colourize to much so the look is much the same

#!/bin/bash

#Red = 0,61,61
#blue = 61,61,0
#green = 61,0,61
#yellow = 0,0,100

find -iname "*.png" -o -iname "*.svg"| while read file
do
if [ ! -L "$file" ];then
echo Converting "$file" ...
convert "$file" -colorize 61,0,61 "$file"
fi
done
