GnomishBeige

GTK 3.x Theme/Style

Score 72%
GnomishBeige

Depends on  GTK 3.x
Downloads:  13706
Submitted:  May 29 2010
Updated:  Mar 1 2014

Description:

NOTE:
======
Unfortunately, after years of Gnome3, even minor updates of GTK+ or Gnome-Shell break themes and waste hours of work.

GnomishBeige is a clean beige theme for GTK3, based on the Adwaita engine, plus a matching GTK2 theme that depends on the latest Murrine and Pixmap engines.

*** Current Dependencies ***

GTK3 = 3.10.X (should work with 3.8 too)
gnome-themes-standard = 3.10.X
gtk2-engines-murrine >= 0.98.1.1 (for GTK2)
gtk2-engines-pixbuf >= 2.24.10 (for GTK2)
Metacity >= 2.34 (for GTK2)

*** Notes ***

1) Ubuntu users should remove the package(s) "overlay-scrollbar" if they see blackened widget areas or if they just want to have the default scrollbars. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/overlay-scrollbar/+bug/1064147

2) Please take a look at the file "README" in the theme folder for a tip on Epiphany.

3) You won't need the source package unless you want to modify the theme or make a deb or an rpm package from it.

Changelog:

.....

Jul 25 2013
-----------
Updated for Gnome-3.8.
Removed the dark variant (which was useless anyway; dark theme lovers could use GnomishDark).

Mar 1 2014
-----------
Updated for GTK+-3.10 but should work with 3.8 too.
Dropped the Shell theme (its maintenance wasn't possible due to the shaky state of Gnome-Shell).

Mar 3 2014
-----------
Added a matching Unity theme for Ubuntu Trusty. Thanks to Alin (hotice).

 your gnomish-beige theme

hi dear,

I did not yet test that theme. But my question was more or less only a request. I like that brown color you started up with....

This looks so perfect to my gnome-shell-theme. I am not an expert in gtk3 and so I need an expert who can do this. So that was my intention to ask you. This request is not a bug... :) This was really only a request....for your wishlist...

Greetings

hi dear,

the scollbars look as they are in your screenshot. But I would like to change their color. So I just need to do that in this file, which you stated??

And my next question would be: I would like the windowborder to be in a bit mor beige-occer color. How to chang that??

I am asking, because I am a real noob in this ind of thing. I never did a gtk3-theme and so I need some instruction, how to change colors... I would appreciate it, if you would share your knowledge with us other users in a kind of how-to or something like that...

But your theme looks pleasing!!!

Greetings
your friend

Hi again,

It's easy to change the color of scrollbar sliders. Go to the theme folder, open the file gtk-widgets.css in gEdit, set gEdit to show line numbers, and go to lines 647, 648, 660 and 661. In all these lines you'll see @theme_bg_color. Replace it with another color in the form #81756a (this is brown; use GIMP or another tool to pick up a color and get its code). You could also change 0.86 and 1.5 in the same lines to tweak the gradient. To see the result, change the GTK theme to Adwaita and change it back to GnomishBeige again with Advanced Settings.

Tweaking window borders is a bit tricky. Their colors are partly defined in lines 13-15 of the file metacity-theme-3.xml. Instead of gtk:bg[NORMAL], you could put another color in the above form. But these are just the colors of the thin lines around windows in different states. If by window border you mean the titlebar highlight, its changing is still trickier. You should study metacity-theme-3.xml and see what its lines mean.

All in all, it takes only practice and patience to write a theme. That's not so difficult as you might think. I hope we'll see your theme on this site :) Ask any question you might have and I'll respond, especially through messaging.

I'm glad that you like it :) You might know how much it has changed since I made its first version for GTK2.

Very elegant and classy, it's one of my favorite theme! It's one of the best also for its usability, because my eyes are not tired as with many other beautiful themes...
Now that Ambiance has been spoiled by the last release, I will always use your theme!
Congratulations, I love it!!

I'm happy you like it.

If GTK+ is upgraded to v3.4 in your distro, the theme won't work in its current form. However, I'll update it as soon as gnome-shell-3.4 comes into Debian. In fact, I'll always update this theme as soon as I can.

I'm trying to use Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin with Unity, and your theme suits perfectly... is one of the few themes that works perfectly in this last release!!
Thank you for your work, I'm a fan of it!
