Gnome Theme Creator

Description:

This is example of what would a theme creator look like. The basic principles are these:

1. You edit(create) a svg template (much like the single canvas workflow for icons in Breath) that contains all images needed for a theme.

2. You set up some more options of the theme.

3. Export as pixbuf theme (or css in the future)

What do you think? Is this worth implementing? It is possible to do it right now but I need a wider discussion about it beforehand.

 your theme creator

Hi Dear,
this looks good as aa first start of an application for creating Metacity-themes. But to give a full feedback, I wuld need a bit more information about it. for example at choosing the text-color. Is it possible to choos between several colors or only the colors shown?? And will this application be available for Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04)??

You see, I need further information about your application.

Greetings

It is just a mockup yet (picture)

I will use the images in the svg vector graphics file to define the look at the metacity. The buttons are color button and you'll be able to choose what you want.

More to add this is not only for metacity theme but for gtk too. It is integrated suite for creating theme suits. Future version will support packaging too.

When released it will indeed help a lot to all the designers who want to express themselves.

Let's hope I find some time sooner that later to start this project.

This is the sort of overhaul required to revolutionize gnome theme design.

Good luck with this project :P

hi dilomo,
I also want to see this program soon!! This is just a "must have" in those times, because not only hte users here but also many beginners want to be creative on Karmic and Lucid, but do not have the necessary skills. So such a program would be such a big help. Please s tart to work on this as soon as possible and please make this application available for Ubuntu 10.04 too!!! I have been searching and waiting for such an application for such a long time now and nobody cared about such a thing. And so it's good that you do it now for all!!! Thanks a lot and don'tlet as wait too long!!!

Greetings

Too great to be true ... and who will be the creator of this? is not about the creating the GUI for the application, a lot of themers can do that... is harder to find someone who could implement this !

We need code !

And is about free software, I think...

I could do that and I think it is possible at the moment (I got some experience with the NW Configurator). But it is very hard to make all work together and it will eat a lot of my studding time so I would probably charge a dollar or two for a download if I make it happen. I think that I deserve at least this support. What do you guys think?

 your idea of taking money

hi dear,
I think, this is not a good idea. I will tell you why.

This is so helpful for us and Linux lives from the idea of opensource-software. Please do not make the same mistake as Microsoft did the whole time. That's one reason, why so many users are switching away. We do not look into it anymore, to pay for these licences, if we can have the same things in Linux for free and even better in quality as it is in Microsoft.

Even we engange ourselfes in making this distro living through creating things like Metacity-themes, GDM-themes, I do iconthemes at the time and I would like to learn to create Metacity-themes. For this, we give a big part from our freetime. So I can understand, that making this program will eat up a big part of your studing-time. But we badly need programs and people like you. There have been so many promises of others, to make such a thing. But none worked in Linux. Everything only worked in Windows and were soon not longer supported. So you are the first person, who seems to bring a big help to us into reality.

Many users here wait for this, because this program brings us an easy way of learning how to create Metacity-themes in Ubuntu. And Ubuntu lives from its creative users. And even for beginners, your program is so needed!!!
So I can only appeal on you, not to take money for this and to publish it on GPL-licence. Your prof will give you a good reference for such a good thing and the joy of us on your program are enough praise I think. Or isn't it??

I hope for your understanding and I will wait for this to come into reality.

Please let me know, what you think ablut my arguments
Thick Greetings
Karmicbastler

I respect your point of view and even I have similar one but still I have to say that praise cannot feed me. Windows may have it's disadvantages but it supports the world's most powerful software that let's people build airplanes, cars, enormous skyscrapers and advanced laptops you probably use everyday (designed by using CAD software that will be missing in the Linux side for a long time).
In order to make this program work as a competition to the windows parts I need some initial funds for research, new hardware, write help manuals etc. so I can't do this for free and you must understand me.
Right now this project is with status Pending approval from me because there are a lot of unknowns with the upcoming Gnome 3.0. If there are any other news you'll learn about them.
