GNOME Splash Screen

Description:

This is a theme for ubuntu's xsplash boot-screen - it should be a welcome change for those who don't use a brown color scheme! (you need ubuntu 9.10, or a distro using xsplash to use this theme)

None of this art is my original work - the animation is from xubuntu, and the ubuntu logo from ubuntu's xsplash theme (actually I did make the black background...).

For the original work:
Copyright: © 2009, Pasi Lallinaho
Copyright: © 2009, Mads Rosendahl
License: CC-BY-SA-3.0

Installation:
First extract the files in the .tar.gz file to your desktop, open the extracted folder, then hit alt=F2, enter gksu nautilus /usr/share/images/xsplash then hit run, enter your password when prompted, then drag the extracted files into the window that popped up (if you don't want to loose the default boot files make a subfolder and move them into it first), close the window and you are done!
If you prefer to use a GUI theme installer rather than getting your hands dirty in the file browser, check out Epidermis http://epidermis.tuxfamily.org/
Installation instruction credit goes to http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2009/11/change-xplash-karmic-xubuntu.html

As some of you have no doubt already discovered, when ubuntu updates xsplash, the original ubuntu theme will be restored. I recommend that you make a sub-folder in the xsplash folder (for example: /usr/share/images/xsplash/dark/ ) and keep a backup copy of the theme there so it will be quicker to fix after ubuntu has updated.

Changelog:

1.1 increased swarm glow/brightness to match ubuntu logo better

 Looks good.

Ties in much nicer with the solitary usplash logo at the start and creates a unified look.

If only I could get 9.10 to install outside of VirtualBox... sigh...

Thanks for all the positive comments, I added a beginner friendly installation guide. What do you think, is it understandable?

Yes this will make the background black, but if you don't want it to, all you have to do is not coby the black backgrounds into the xsplash folder.

On the other hand you could just copy the black backgrounds, but not the swarm animation. Then you would get the ubuntu logo with the "cylon eye" animation and a black bakground.

Oops, I misread your comment! To further clarify, the xsplash screen and any modifications to it are completely independent of the login screen. Sorry if I caused further confusion.

I'm an idiot! I guess I shouldn't have spoken before I actually tested this out (I have autologin enabled).

Ok, so the final word on this is that the xsplash background is in fact the same as the login background. In other words, if you install this xsplash theme the background of the login screen will be black.
