 previews

by Whise on: Jun 3 2010

Score 50%

although now (.3.9.1) i have previews that dont reshow them selfs after a few ms, this version is infact a regression from the previous version, because previews dont show for minimized windows...

The main reason i need previews is for minimized windows, no one needs previews for active windows

please try to make the preview system from last version work properly, this workarround is a lesser solution

Ill poke arround in the code from 0.3.9 to see if i can come up with a solution to the other bugs

You can use live priviews with Kwin instead of Compiz. It works for minimized windows.

It was Talika's code I ported to python for x.0.30. The problem with this method is it's speed, especially when written in pyton.

The method used in Talika and in DockbarX x.0.30 was to take a screenshot of the window with libxcomposite, put it in a pixbuf and resize it. The upside with this method is that it leaves a pixbuf you can reuse later for minimized windows. (Notice that minimized windows used the last picture shown in the preview, no matter how old that picture was or how much that had changed in that window, not the optimal solution.) The downside with this method is high cpu usage and some higher memory usage to keep all the pixbufs. It was completely unusable on a netbook, for example, it felt really sluggish.

The method used in DockBar 0.25 and DockbarX x.0.39.1 is much simpler to maintain. Simply tell what window you want a preview of and where in the popup window it should be placed and compiz (or kwin) takes care of the rest. This is clean and a much more suitable solution for an applet written in python.

Previews for minimized windows is always implemented through some kind of hack (with different degrees of ugliness) since minimized windows per definition doesn't have window that could be previewed. Kwin for example, if I'm not mistaken, get it's previews by not minimizing windows, but simply put them of screen. My point is: you need a hack, fine, but it would be better to have it somewhere else than in dockbarx, since that hack surely will be ugly. Request that compiz fusion finally adds a hack for it, or use kwin that already has one.

Just my 2 cents.

New method is much simpler and faster because works on WM's side and uses OpenGL and power of your graphics card.
If you want previews of minimized windows with Compiz please write feature request to Compiz developers.

 Maybe additional information??

After upgrade I was wondering what's happen with previews. I found in Your changelog what to do in compiz, but it will be very usefull if You put this information in program itself. Most of the people are lazy (like me for example) and They have no idea what to do. Just mark in program that this option must have KDE compability enabled ;)

In no preview mode, the previews are fonts of title, the highlighting of fonts is not complete.

I confirm that this bug will reproduce if my Chinese title of windows is too long. But it is no problem when the title contain only English. If this bug can be fixed? Thanks.

 Small addition to FAQ

Look at this http://escience.anu.edu.au/lecture/cg/Import/GUI_Timeline/thumbarthur.gif
And read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icon_bar

Dock-like interface is not idea of Microsoft. It was invented in 1987, long time before W7.

I know all elements of win7 taskbar has been seen in one form or another before, but still, win7 taskbar was the first to implement it in a way that actually had the productivity improvements I spoke of in the FAQ. I don't think we should need to downplay the improvements win7 taskbar did bring just because it's from Microsoft.

For more background, see this text:
http://arstechnica.com/software/news/2009/01/dock-and-windows-7-taskbar.ars

Perhaps I should add that one to the FAQ?

 Very very cool tool.

I really like this. Nice work.

About the only feature that I could imagine to mage this better is the ability to pick "roll up" or "shade window" or whatsitcalled as an action, as I am actually working with this. ;)

But it's great and definately worth using as it is.

Whats a comment without some "uh, but can it do..." kind of line, eh?

Thanks.

There is shade option, but I see that that option only exists for window buttons. It would make sense to add it for group buttons as well, I guess.

Yes, I am aware of it being there for window buttons. But shading the window is just something to get it "out of sight" quickly, without having it minimize all the way to the bar or If I want to read something on another screen that is obstructed I might want to role up the obstructing window.

So going the slow way of group-button -> window button is... cumbersome? or more cumbersome as it would have to be.

Still - I love the app. love it!
