I really want to try this on miy Debian Sid, but on sid repo there is no python-gnome2-desktop and the one from Lenny breaks other packages...
How can I solve? Any suggestions?

Dockbarx doesn't run without it either?

If I understood debain naming correctly sid is unstable and more up to date than lenny, right? So it's not that it's too old for dockbar.

Ok, forgetting the PPA, I successfully manually installed dockbarX but I have a major problem...When I try to open the preferences dialog it does't open, either by right clicking the handle and selecting "properties" or by double-clicking the handle...can you help me?

Thanks a lot!

Did you copy dbx_preference.py to /usr/bin? The instructions is missing from README, I know it will be fixed soon.

There's also a bug in dbx_preference.py that might affect you, a fix is available in the launchpad branch and will be released soon.

Actually no...now I copy it and works! Thanks a lot!
Which is this bug that you're talking about?

Just one another thing...it's possible to set a custom icon for pinned applications?

I love dockbarX, Thanks again!

There is a bug that stopped some people from opening the preference dialog, but you don't seem to be affected by it.

You can set an custom icon by

1) Changing the icon in alacarte (or right click gnome menu and choose "edit menu") will change the icon for dockbarx as well.

2) Make a custom launcher by dragging an launcher from gnome menu to a folder and the right click and choose "properties", change the icon, close and drag the launcher to dockbarx. Don't delete the launcher from the folder! (If the launcher doesn't recognize it's windows, right click the launcher and choose edit identifier and choose the correct identifier from the drop-down list, when a window of the program is opened)

No, It seem that I'm not affected by that bug, now properties works!

Feel free to use my feedback and announce compatibility with debian sid!

I click on properties but no window shows up. I tried to run it in terminal and again the preferences button doesn't do anything. In terminal I get only these warnings

** (dockbarx.py:31932): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowState' as flags when in fact it is of type 'GEnum'

** (dockbarx.py:31932): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowActions' as flags when in fact it is of type 'GEnum'

** (dockbarx.py:31932): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowMoveResizeMask' as flags when in fact it is of type 'GEnum'

Did you copy dbx_preference.py to /usr/bin?

If you did you can also start preference dialog with dbx_preference.py from terminal. There is a bug in that file. I will release the bug fix soon.

It was my fault that I didn't copy dbx_preference but the readme in the archive doesn't mention it.

No, forgot that too. This release was slightly rushed. :(

Ah, I forgot to change the default behavior after the beta testing period of that feature. Sorry. I will change it to the next release. The bug with preference dialog is fixed and will also be released soon.

For now you can change the behavior via gconf-editor. Go to /applications/dockbarx and untick "show_only_current_desktop".

 another suggestion

by Anarchj on: Apr 29 2010

Score 50%

In my panel I like to separate tasks and shortcuts for application, so I insert my application icons directly on the panel and not in dockbarx. Maybe you can add an option to make move the icon on the right next to the shortcuts when you open an application, and when you close this task the icon returns where you have put before, with the other application icons. Doing this you don't have duplication of icon on the panel but while you can separate shortcuts on the left and tasks to the right. I hope that you understood (my english is orrible :) ) though i suppose it's difficult to do.

Dockbarx is working around the philosophy that the most productive way to handle windows and launching for an application is to do it all from the same spot at all time. For example to interact with firefox is always done from the same few pixels on dockbarx.

I can't really see why you want to separate launchers and the window and I dont want to add an option that IHMO might make people less productive. Sorry.

Keep suggesting improvements for dockbarx though. It's appreciated.

 Suggestion

by adamantis on: May 2 2010

Score 50%

I really like the new popup preview windows that has been added.

I would however like to suggest an additional option to enable popup preview of minimized windows but keeping it separate from the "Show popup only if more than one window is open" or perhaps as a suboption that is only available when "Show popup only if more than one window is open" is checked.

Preview of minimized windows works very well with grouped applications with more then one window open. For single windows i have chosen not to have popup previews and instead use the Opacify settings only to show the application while hovering the cursor over the icon, but this does ofcourse not work if the application is minimized.

Hope you understand how i mean, if not i can send a pm in swedish to try to explain further.
