Description:

Some people from the Linux Mint forums may recall I once tried to make a GTK3-compatible version of Shiki-Colors (which ultimately turned into Zukitwo-Colors due to a lack of knowledge or experience of theme styling). After working on the Zukitwo-Colors themes (as well as Zukitwo-Primary-Colors and Mint-Z Improved) for some time I decided to try my hand at it again using the knowledge I've gained since I started.

These themes are my attempt to make Shiki-Colors compatible with GNOME and GTK 3, borrowing the Zukitwo-Colors themes and altering them slightly to better match the look of Shiki-Colors, and altering the GTK 2 themes slightly to better match what I could achieve with the GTK 3 themes. I've also made GNOME Shell and Cinnamon themes (borrowed from Zukitwo-Colors and altered as I felt necessary) that I feel fit the overall look and feel of the Shiki-Colors themes.

Unfortunately I have a very limited understanding of how the Mutter XML code works and how different it is from the older Metacity XML code, so I haven't yet made an updated window manager theme.

I hope anyone who missed the old, GTK2-only Shiki-Colors will find these to be an adequate update. There are some small differences between my themes and the original versions (mostly due to an inability to include certain features from the GTK2 themes in the GTK3 themes, so for consistency between them I removed those features), however, I believe those differences do not detract from the overall look and feel of the themes.

NOTE: The GTK3 and GNOME Shell themes require GNOME/GTK 3.4 and Unico 1.0.2 to work correctly. These themes will not work correctly with GNOME/GTK 3.6 and will not be updated to work with them, due to GTK 3.6 requiring image assets for styling many elements.

I am a great Fan of the Shiki-Wise-Theme that comes with older Linux-Mint-Versions.

In the actual Linux-Mint-13-Mate-Edition I was missing Shiki-Wise-Theme.

Installing it, there was a bad look, because some applications (Transmission) needs a GTK3-Support from the selected Theme.

So I was looking about hours for a Shiki-Wise-Theme that will work with LM13.

AND YOUR THEME DOES! :-)

In the File-Manager Caja (Fork from Nautilus) has the background a white Color, instead of a grey/black Color it has in the original Shiki-Wise-Version.

Can you change this Color-Difference? I think this little change would make your Theme perfect. :-)

I'll have to look into it. I borrowed some application-specific theme styling from the Zukitwo-Colors themes I had previously made (which are derived from Zukitwo-Dark and use the same application-specific styling), I could probably remove the Caja-specific styling in order to revert the look to the default, but I won't actually know how that changes things... Perhaps, if you could, would you mind taking screenshots of Caja before removing the caja.rc file from the theme's apps folder and after doing so so I can see the difference..? I would appreciate that.

If you extracted the archive into your /usr/share/themes folder, it should be /usr/share/themes/Shiki-Nouveau-Wise/ (for the Wise theme variant). Navigate to that folder, then to the gtk-2.0/apps folder inside and delete the Caja.rc file, that will remove the app-specific styling for Caja and revert its look to the default appearance.

That said, I do rather like the appearance of Caja as it is with that file in place, it closely matches the appearance of Nautilus in GNOME 3. I'd still like to see a screenshot of Caja without the app-specific styling in place just to compare, so when you've removed the Caja.rc file from gtk-2.0/apps, could you please post one..?

I'm really sure that the Shiki-Wise-Theme in Linux Mint 10/11 looks in Nautilus like the following Screenshot:

Perhaps it was a "modified" Shiki-Wise-Theme, i don't know. :-(

I installed the Shiki-Noveau-Theme from here as a deb-package:

In the evening I will delete the File in the Theme-Folder, and upload a screenshot of "Caja" after this. Because i am sitting at a Windows-PC at the Moment. :-)

In GTK3-Apps (like Audacious or Totem) your Theme has a darker Background. When Caja/Nautilus has the darker background too, i think your Theme will be perfect. :-)

Sorry for my bad english, it's not my native language... and many thanks that you are in a dialogue with me about the theme.

OK, i have deleted the caja.rc-file.

But Caja has the same appearance as before. The file seems to has no effect.

The darker background you show there was something Linux Mint did specifically with Nautilus, along with using a redish background when running Nautilus as root.

You'll have to ask someone on the forums if they might be able to help you configure Caja to work that way, like Nautilus used to back in the GNOME 2 days, since it was handled separately from the GTK themes themselves.

As for Totem and Audacious (and Eye of GNOME, and GNOME Sushi, and possibly other applications), they prefer to use a dark style when one's available, otherwise they fallback to the default style. I included a darker style specifically for GNOME Sushi since it seems to depend highly on it to be readily usable (ie. the fonts need to be light to be readable on the dark background), and since it's there, any other apps that prefer the darker style will also use it.

In GNOME Shell 3.4, selected text in a search box appears white-on-white. A quick fix would be something like the following:

The color here is specific to the Dust theme, but you can just swap out whatever the appropriate selected background color is.

Similarly, the selection background (black) for the run dialog is barely noticable; a similar tweak gives a much more pleasing effect:

Again, I'm just using the GTK selected background color here, so Wise, Brave, Noble, etc. will need to swap out the appropriate shade.

This is already a great theme - Shiki colors have been my goto theme pretty much since they were first released, and this set carries on the tradition admirably.

Oh, wow, I'm glad you caught that... I haven't ever had to select text in either entry field and I never did look that closely at the code to realize there were some small issues there. I'll look into fixing that soon!

(I guess this means I'll also have to fix the other themes I've made as well, since they also use a lot of the same code, and likely have these issues as well...)

Hi. I'm running archlinux and had a big update recently and your theme is not looking as it should any more. Here are a couple of screens showing file manager which doesn't use gtk3 showing ticks fine and gthumb which uses gtk3 no ticks, just blue squares.

I am aware of this, unfortunately...

The Unico theme engine update for GTK 3.6 has been stripped of most of its functionality, so everything it used to be able to do in CSS now requires image assets, similar to the Adwaita engine. This includes check and radio buttons, inner and outer strokes for button borders and the like, and probably some other things I'm not fully aware of.

As such, these themes, as well as my others, will not be updated for GTK 3.6. I am not interested in attempting to make all of the now-necessary image assets for 17 different themes in both light and dark styles.

I *may* consider maintaining the GNOME Shell and Cinnamon themes, since they're pure CSS and can more easily be updated with any changes/additions that are necessary with new versions. I probably won't though, since maintaining the Shell and Cinnamon themes without the matching GTK themes seems somewhat pointless.

I recently put a note on the themes' pages on deviantART stating they do not work with GNOME/GTK 3.6, however I forgot to put the same note up on their pages on this site. I will rectify that immediately...

That's a real shame as this theme is PERFECT for me. I understand your position though with not wanting all the extra hassle. I guess I can live with minor glitch, seeing as it's only in gnome3 reliant apps which I don't use too many of.

The author of the Zukitwo themes (the themes all of mine are ultimately based on) isn't thrilled with the changes either. He does plan to get his themes updated for GTK 3.6, though he may be scrapping all but the original Zukitwo theme since he also doesn't want to make all of the images for those variations. He said he may try to make the images somewhat neutral though, and alter the colour scheme of the other themes a little to fit the images for the original theme.

All in all, this Unico engine update's proving to be rather frustrating for the people who relied on it for pure CSS theme styling. Having to rely on image assets makes theme modification *very* inflexible compared to pure CSS styling.

Unfortunately I don't really know of anything similar to these themes that are GTK 3.6 compatible. Keeping in mind that GTK 3.6 still only recently came out, I doubt most themes have yet been updated to work fully with it, and any themes that rely on Unico are going to require a lot of rework, if the themes' authors are inclined to do so...

There's a theme called Clearlooks Phenix you might be interested in, I'm not sure if it's been updated for GTK 3.6 yet, and it relies at least partially on Unico, so it may not be perfect, and it's only really similar to the old GTK2 Clearlooks theme (which there was a version of Shiki-Colors that used the Clearlooks GTK2 engine, my themes used the Murrine-based version since it worked better with the Unico-based Zukitwo themes I modified to make Shiki-Nouveau.)

Clearlooks Phenix 3.6 dropped Unico/Adwaita dependance. Maybe it would be a decent slate for anyone wanting to port Shiki. I used to mess with GTK2 themes all the time, then GTK3 made it more involved.... I'm so irritated with 3.6 changing everything up AGAIN. I really hope that this theme gets carried forward by someone eventually.

I do hate to disappoint anyone, but I won't be updating these or my other themes for GNOME 3.6. Unfortunately, at least for these themes, the image assets created for the Zukitwo theme would not work for these themes, as I intended them to look as much like the original Shiki-Colors theme (Murrine version, mind you) as possible. Even then, if I were to use the image assets from Zukitwo, I would still have to take the time to recolour them for these themes, something I'm just not inclined to do.

A big thanks for carrying it as far as you did. It is daunting to have to start anew after all this work- that I understand. I had a few custom things here and there going just the way I like it myself, then WHAM it changed yet again!

...Really hoping someone picks up the torch. I'll try here and there with it but it's so hard to find the time.

Thanks for the information. Now I understand better what happens (why assets images rather than CSS gradients). What a shame!
Like jpfleury (Clearlooks-Phenix) and Satya (Orion, Evolve...) authors, the best solution is using NO additionnal theme engine (engine: none;) and pure CSS coding.

It's quite close in comparison, though I'll stick with this shiki as I prefer the darker elements.

It's a nice theme. I too prefer the contrast of light and dark in Shiki over it, but with a bit of work it could be tweaked with the same color values. I think the biggest task in "Shiki-izing" it would be restoring the stepper buttons and dropping in the proper assets for them to look correct. Of course, I'm not much of a GTK3 themer, so that's just a guess.

I am enjoying this theme. This theme is running well, and not many of them do on my setup: Xubuntu; plus Gala, Slingshot, and Plank from the elementary project.
