Description:

This is a collection of svg flag images for the input language notifier in the gnome-panel. They are styled to match the Ubuntu-mono-light icon set.

I made these to solve the problem with the input language indicator menu in Ubuntu 10.10. It displays both a text label for the language and an annoying (and pointless) generic icon. After installing these images and activating flag display (see below) the text label disappears and you have a nice, compact language indicator that does not interrupt this monochrome icon theme.

To use the images, untar (expand) the downloaded file into the folder ~/.icons/flags. If there is no \\\"flags\\\" sub-folder just create it. Then you need to enable the display of flags for input languages in gconf:

1. Open gconf-editor (in Ubuntu type ALT-F2 to open the "run application" dialogue and then type "gconf-editor" without the quotes and press enter).

2. Navigate the folder tree to Desktop > Gnome > Peripherals > Keyboard > Indicator

3. Activate the check-box for "showFlags"

If you don't see the flag images right away just change your input language or switch icon themes to refresh the icons.

I've included a template file with the icon background in case others would like to create their own additional flags. At present there is a flag for every language supported by xkb, but not a distinct flag for each keyboard layout within a language group. I hope to remedy this soon.

These icons should be by default in Natty. How about opening a blueprint in Launchpad?

I'm glad you like them. How would I go about opening a blueprint in launchpad? I checked out the site and I see that I can "register a project." Is that the place to start?

 Didn't work

Hi!

Thanks for your proposal, however, it didn't work :( Although the keyboard icon is no longer displayed, another icon with a "forbidden" sign is shown instead. I thought the flag's folder couldn't be read but it has all permissions and the icons are located in ~/.icons/flags/ as instructed. Any ideas?

This is the info about my version in case it helps:

serch@serch-HP:~$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 10.10 \n \l

serch@serch-HP:~$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=10.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=maverick
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 10.10"

I had the same problem and have fixed it.
1). Right-click on the Panel area
2). Choose "Add to Panel"
3). Choose Indicator Applet
4). Left-click on "Add" button

 broken in 12.10

I've been using this since 10.04 through 12.04. But upon upgrading to 12.10, it no longer works, and just displays a "forbidden" icon.
