This is about how it would be nice to have the gnome-panel, rather than actual settings available by default :)

 not bad

Hello
Your idea is a good one, I think it can improve usability.
However gnome project have already chosen to remove the panels in gnome 3. They are developing a "shell" that is quite a good thing too. I'm using it at the moment, they are still a lot of improvements to do but it is very usable.
You can have more informations about it on the dedicated webpage : http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell

I think so, since you could have a button only instead of panels...
I saw the videos from the Gnome's page, about the GnomeShell...
this is very different about how actually is managed the desktop...
I think changes should be introduced gradually, due the risk to become something
like "aaah, I don't get it, it's too different for me"
So, I think small changes is better :)

have a nice weekend

 panels

Personally I think most people get ideas right the first time. I can't really see anyone improving on a panel.Gnome 3 looks a total mess. I think it will be counter-productive and resource hungry, basically the same mistakes vista made.
people really just want stability and reliabilty.
Eye candy is ok if done properly, but I think you need professional design for this, thats why Apple seem to be doing so well. They intigrate genuine usabillity with eyecandy, most others just manage one or the other. I don't think eyecandy has ever been one of gnomes strong point.
People have stuck with gnome through kde's many generations and like it the way it is. I think it just needs some subtle improvements.
