Cosmos Screensaver: extra images

The archive contains 13 astronomical images. The focus is primarily images within this solar system.

The images are intended for use with the Cosmos screensaver that is bundled with Ubuntu. They can also be used as background images.

The images were obtained from the NASA website. They are all in the public domain.

I needed to save a number of the images at a lower quality in order to get the archive below the 750Kb limit. Higher resolution images are available if someone wants to supply webspace.

v1.0 (obsolete)
To use the images with the cosmos screensaver, download them, unzip the archive and copy the images to

The archive contains a README file that has more detailed instructions.
(Note: I needed to delete v1.0 due to problems uploading a new version of the archive in .deb form)

v1.1 (restored)
I've repackaged these images as a .deb archive. This should make installation and removal much easier. New installation & removal instructions follow.

To install
1) download the .deb package
2) open a nautilus window
3) navigate to the package in the nautilus window
4) double click on the package to install it with gdebi

To remove
1) open the synaptic package manager
2) search for 'screensaver'
3) in the result set find the entry 'gnome-screensaver-cosmos-extras'
4) remove the entry

v1.2 (obsolete)
It looks like gnome-look will not permit the upload of a .deb file. I've reverted to the old tar.gz format. Please use the same installation instructions as v1.0

I figured out the problem. The gnome-look upload file logic chokes on filenames that contain multiple periods. The original deb was named gnome-screensaver-cosmos-extras_1.1.0_all.deb which is correct as far as debian package versioning filename conventions. The extra periods in the filename caused problems, though. Renaming the deb to gnome-screensaver-cosmos-extras.deb results in a package that still installs & removes fine and plays nice with gnome-look. Please use the instructions for v1.1 for installation & removal of this package.

I botched something in the packaging of v1.3. The package will leave an extraneous file named debian-binary at the root of the filesystem. (Sorry guys. I've just learned how to make these packages.) I've repackaged this so that the package passes validation by the lintian binary. v1.4 is a much cleaner package than v1.3. I'd recommend that anyone that used v1.3- upgrade to v1.4. Hopefully, this will be the last one.

Fixed accreditation for the image of the Horsehead nebula.

Most images in the Public Domain. The shot of the Horsehead Nebula copyright & photo credit T.A.Rector (NOAO/AURA/NSF) and Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA/NASA)

Sorry. It looks like gnome-look silently refused my upload of a .deb file. I'm guessing this is for security reasons. I've reverted to the old tar.gz format while I look for a new way to host the .deb (since the .deb is the right way to do this).

I've got the same problem with one of my files... wath I've done, I put my documents on google docs and in the share option I've got a public link.
Instead of uploading the file, I just pasted the link... may be you will prefer something esle than google docs... for me it works well.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will use your method if I need to upload something bigger than 750K.

In my case, I figured out what gave me the 404 error. The software behind the upload web form choked on a file name with more than one period.

So I had something like
which resulted in a 404.

A file rename worked around this problem. I ditched the versioning info that was in the file name and went with

Hi! The description claims that the images are public domain, but I can't find the original horsehead nebula image released under that image, only under some more restrictive licenses. Do you have a link to the PD image perhaps? Thanks!

Hi highvoltage,
I do not have the original link from which I downloaded this image from the NASA website. When I attempted to find the original link, I found this one instead (cross referenced from the NASA site):

The National Optical Astronomy Observatory has slightly different terms of usage than NASA or the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. There is no license, but there is a copyright notice requirement.
Photo Credit: T.A.Rector (NOAO/AURA/NSF) and Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA/NASA)

I believe that the usage of this image falls under their 3rd usage category (copied below from their terms of use)

Personal, Non-Profit Use: NOAO allows reproduction, authorship of derivative works, and other transformations of the original work strictly for personal, non-profit/non-commercial/non-retail use without further permission, subject to the second paragraph under II.B. and the General Conditions section stated above. Some examples of personal, non-profit/non-commercial/non-retail uses are downloading images for personal posters or screensavers or as gifts for friends and relatives.

I will update the copyright status & deb accordingly.
