i make my own gdm theme by copy and paste. the gdm you've installed were placed in /usr/share/gdm/themes. to make your own gdm, copy any theme folder you want to another folder. rename the copied folder, copy the picture you want to use as gdm theme picture.

inside the copied folder, there is a .xml file which some line you need to modify.

sample:

you should change the "fallen_angel.jpg" with your own picture:

sample:

still inside the copied folder, open your picture with any picture editor and save as screenshot.jpg, to make your picture appear in the login window manager.

after all that finish, copy it to the /usr/share/gdm/themes. one matter that still buggin' me is, the name of the theme won't change and i still cannot find how to change it. hope this is useful :). cheers.

There's the gdmthemetester tool too. Should be installed along side GDM.

 gdmthemetester

I am running into the same problem, and found a workaround for calling the gdmthemetester from an editor.
Using Anjuta IDE , load plugin for Tools ,calling outside programs -- add a tool for /usr/bin/gdmthemetester xdmcp
I use the parameters
$(file_manager_current_directory) $(editor_current_filename_without_ext)
for the directory
$(editor_current_directory)
and check fun in terminal.

This is helping me test my themes faster,as I edit. If anyone knows of a better way to do this let me know.

Hope this helps.
