Hi, I'm using ubuntu 9.04, and I'm trying to replace my splash screen. I don't know what to do and can't find any guide to teach me how. Could someone please explain to me how to add a splash screen? I'm trying to use this one

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Azenis+Usplash?action=content&content=111188&PHPSESSID=11d9b375c047a557aa73997710ca46c0

Help would be appreciated, thanks.

sorry i didn't notice this before.

it's easy. install "startupmanager" with synaptic, or run
sudo apt-get install startupmanager
then start it, and click "manage usplash"
add the one you want (it should be a .so file) and switch to that in the drop down menu.

the download for whatever usplash you want shuld be an .so file, or a compressed one that has the .so file in it. to make your own usplash i use the one usplash maker (not the TUM one, it doesn't work for me). just search "usplash" on gnome-look.

Resistance is futile.

i know in 9.10 u can just install the package from synaptic. probably the same. if u mean individual screenlets, u either extract them to .screenlets, or drag them into the screenlets manager.

right click on the desktop -->change desktop background
then go to the "themes" tab, drag the icon theme (tar.gz) into the window, and hit apply.

that works in most cases, if it doesn't, either you need to hit "customize" and select the icons, so extract the icons to *user*/.themes/*icon theme name*, then do "customize"

hope this helps :-)

 Customization Confusion!

 by gallifrey81 on: May 17 2010

Hello all! New to this forum, and (relatively) new to Linux. My recent adventures in learning have lead me to want to customize my Gnome Desktop, and I have had varied levels of success. However, I came to this site to download themes, and now I am just confused! Metacity, GTK, GTK2, Compiz, Beryl!!! Emerald themes listed under compiz/Metacity, etc. I have no idea what Emerald is or what it does, or how it works with compiz. Can anyone point me to a decent tutorial about these things, or at least advise on the best way to select themes, as I am really confused here!

Many thanks, and I look forward to being a member of, and hopefully contributing to, this community! :)

i don't have a tutorial, but Emerald is a window border decorator. you can install it with synaptic (emerald theme manager).
metacity is also window borders (but can't be animated on hovering over buttons).
gtk2 is the main controls of the windows.

hope that helps some. :-)
