Good Morning to you all,
I currently have installed on my desktop the ubuntu 8.10, I really think it is awesome. Just that I really new to this and I am not sure where to locate the files, like for example the program files in windows would be c:/program files, I thnk I need a ubuntu for dummies or something. Right now I really enjoyed the splash screens and the log on, but I am not sure how to install them or even where to begin, I also liked the icons but I am not sure how to install that either. Also I am very confused with the gnome and kde, can you run icons for kde on a gnome desktop ? How do I install the log on screens ? how do I install the icons ? how do I install the themes like for vlc or whatever ? Please if someone can help me, I would really be greatful, I really like the ubuntu but often get frustrated due that I am really use to the windows desktop so there are alot of things that I dont know how to do. Please someone be my mentor.

First, you should look through the Ubuntu forums. You'll find a lot of resources there.

Generally speaking, most people usually stick with one window manager. Gnome and KDE are not interchangeable systems, so icons and all that will only work for the window managers they were designed for.

There are compatibility libraries you can install to run certain apps under both window managers, but most folks usually pick one and go with that.

I use Gnome, and if you're here, you probably are using it too. All the stuff here is designed to work with Gnome.

 System Sound Problem

For some reason, Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy heron won't let me use custom system sounds, or any system sounds except the login sound for that matter. What should I do? (I would've posted this on the ubuntu forums, but they are currently down.)

Go to : ->System->Preferences->Sound and you must select the Enable sound server startup option, and the Sounds for events option before you can access the Sound Events tabbed section... there is the "Help" button for this ;)
