If you are in troubles with Ubuntu 7.10 consider installing the previous release as it's far stable than 7.10

Regarding your question, try searching inside synaptic (installer) or easier enough from whatever terminal you like: aptitude search 'gtk*2' or
apt-get search 'gtk*2'

I don't know if I am wrong with that search criteria but that's pretty much what you want for finding your current GTK package.

However, I think you are a little confused as you don't tell why do you need updating GTK, I really think there's no real need to do that

Thank you very much for your answer. Well, I wanted to know how to get GTK 2 and so on because I wanted to make an own theme. There's no real site telling me what I need to create an own theme. Also there are no step-by-step tutorials... I really got some creative ideas but I don't know how to realize them. I don't know how pwoplw who do create their own themes learned it...

Do you really think Feisty Fawn is better than Gutsy Gibbon?

Sure! I do use Gentoo but recently installed Ubuntu 7.10 for my mother and it was a real mess... Gentoo is pretty much bleeding edge, very faster and stable without degrading generally in such way.

Think about it, she is a noob and something as simple as the gnome theme manager stopped working after installing some apps... Sincerely I am not new at all and that's pretty stupid, frustrating and bad name for GNU and Linux. On the other hand a friend of mine and some other people tried the previous version and said it works pretty OK! considering they are very new to Linux too.

Regarding your other question: http://live.gnome.org/GnomeArt/Tutorials/GtkThemes
Do remember that the .themes directory at $HOME is your best friend for realizing how themes are really done.

I hope you do contribute great and memorable themes here.

Thank you for your help , I was quite lost in all this and you helped me out , very appreciated.

I might try Gentoo, it seems to be pretty cool. I am not very familiar with all the Linux distros and well , I'm a noob myself ,actually. So I just read a little bit on the web to see what kind of "skills" Gentoo requires. It seems to be very userfriendly and all so I guess it's pretty nice.
I was going to ask you whether you use KDE or GNOME on Gentoo but well ...it's GNOME-Look.org .. lol.

Thank you very much forf your tips for theme creation, I really NEEDED those. I'll try my best to create some nice stuff ^^ .

If anyone know a Theme of CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit) System for Gnome, it will be awsome, what do you think about it?

If anyone can do a very well theme and are a fan of the series, will be great.

(Sorry about my english)... I hope you understand the petition, I'm new with Ubuntu and Gnome, good new year for all...

i just tried to register - but the capcha does not show (firefox and opera).
I had to browse through a dozen diferent sites until i got to KDE-apps.org which does show the capcha. Registered there and got back here...

it is quite impossible to notify this unless one sees the capcha...
